Guys, I'm having a real problem. I really can drive a manual trans. Quite a few years back I had a NHRA Modified Production Nova with a four speed and was really pretty good with it, It held the National Record for over two years.
But this friggin truck is wearing me out. I changed the shifter to a B&M and had it adjusted to the shortest throw at first, couldn,t hit 2nd or 3rd very well, so I lengthened it to almost the longest setting thinking I was't getting enough leverage at the shorter throw. I put a T Handle on it yesterday thinking I could get a better grip and maybe a more positive shift. I can hit 3rd maybe 50% of the time. If anyone has any suggestions I sure would appreciate it.

My speedshifting is done foot to the floor, tapping the clutch between gears.:dontknow: :dontknow:

Alot of people swear by the Gen IV shifter from Xmetal..Patrick did a comparison of both the B+M and the Xmetal..its on here somewhere..
Im sure alot of people are going to tell you to call Boomer..

I'll have some drag race experience with the Gen IV early next month. I'll be sure to pass along my thoughts.

I would suggest getting rid of the t-handle and go back to the stock shift ball. Anytime I try to manipulate the shift it gets fubar'd.

Find that pushing almost straight up (slight pressure to the right) works the best but even then will miss a few here and there.

The GenIV shifter helps out quite a bit with the 2nd-3rd shift although it does have a couple of drawbacks.....1st to second and 3rd to second are a little more challenging with the GenIV.

If you are ever in the Raleigh/Durham area, let me know and I will loan you my GenIV shifter or you can drive my truck ;)

I,m going to the Boomer GTG in Evansville next week, maybe I can get some help there, can,t wait to get on the Dragstrip Sunday with you guys.

With the B&M shifter and a T-handle on mine, all I have to do is shove straight up with the palm of my hand and mine goes straight into 3rd every time. I can't see how you are missing 3rd with that shifter. :dontknow:

a member here was dragging at the track.....well trying to drag at the track...:D ..he missed 3rd over and over...

after blaming the shifter, clutch, hydr. lines, flywheel etc...I suggested that he turn his wrist in slightly to the left (the backside of your hand and wrist shoud look like a "C" when on the shifter)...

Bam 4 runs in a row with no misses....

"It isn't the arrow....it is the Indian".....:D

your syncros are possibly worn out from trying to speed shift. I would suggest not shifting with the accelerator to the floor.

good luck!

I was going to offer a suggestion but then I just realized I don't own a 6-speed anymore.

PM sent.

LMAO.

I had an issue with 3rd a lot with the stock shifter, that is why the write-up was done between the two. My issue is I was moving the lever to the left from my 2nd to 3rd gear shift and nailing 1st. Some hit 5th, some hit 1st, some just hit a 'wall' in the shifter gears. Depending on what your doing, I would try not to do that specific thing (Ex: I was moving the shifter over to the left, so I trained myself to try to move to the right more when shifting). I noticed for the B&M, the lowest position, stock ball was the best setup. Also, with it on the lowest setting, its best with the console in the UP position so you can get leverage.

Next, the hydraulic system and clutch was the icing on the cake. I got to about 85-90% consistent shifts, but then I did the hydraulics and clutch setup, I couldn't miss a shift even if I tried. that was the last 10-15% need for firm, consistent shifts.

Hope that helps...

Excellent advice also.

what is your point little man?

My suggestion (with the stock shifter): RELAX!
I know that sounds odd- esp. in the middle of a hot quarter mile run- but it's working with this shifter.

I no longer "jam" or "rip" it into 3rd. I use a VERY light touch and let the shifter do most of the work. I push it with 2 fingers. Or close your hand into a fist and 'punch' the shifter from 2nd to 3rd.

Hooked on Shifting....worked for me. :D

Personally, I find that when I am trying to slam the shifter through the gears (in the heat of the moment) the wrong gear is more likely to be engaged. I too believe in ease of operation. Usually the shifter just needs a gentle guide. Simple as that.:dontknow: But still, to each his own.:D

I didn't know quad cabs needed to be shifted like that. :dontknow:

If you really want to know what my point is....well... here it is.....

I must admit I made a mistake. I should of quoted the entire post. The part that had me ROTF----LMAO was where you suggested that his wrist should be turned in slightly to the left.....THEN I got a visual of you showing him that. I figured that was how some of you CALI boys roll.....BIG MAN.:D

Next thing you know your sig will reflect rainbow stripes on the "SUPER------TANK".

As I said before, put yourself in a 6-speed and this IDIOT will drag your a$$ down the 1320. PERIOD.:burnout:
