help me figure out what is going on

i put my transmission back together to find out whenever i try to engage 4th it grinds. just got back from a vacation and took the trans out last night. i stood the trans vertical (tailshaft down) to take off adapter plate to get the 4th gear sycnro. well the block ring (ring that sits on the bevel of 4th gear) is chewed up where the notches for the keys sit. so i put in a new one and i reshimmed the mainshaft because i dont think i shimmed it correctly the first time. this time i'm in the recommended tolerances for endplay (did this while trans in vertical position as it shows in the manual) but i still get grinding whenever i engage 4th. now what do i do?

could it be that when i installed the sycnro for 3/4 i pushed it on too far towards third gear causing the keying in the sycnro to not fully engage the 4th gear blocker ring?

anyone? i just bought a new ring and new keys thinking that the keys might be worn down.

thats what it sounds like bud, but honestly I couldnt tell ya without actually seeing it, I jsut take mine to a shop close to me here an for $1000 get a total rebuilt tranny out the door that shifts like butter

You have gone much farther into the gear box than I dare. Sometime the decision to do or buy has to be examined very closely on the front end. I hope someone here will be able to help.

i dont feel like buying a new tranny because i've already done so much and i feel like i'm so close. my only real problem is shifting into 4th from any gear except straight from third. once parts get in i'll take it apart again. i'm getting pretty good and fast at getting tranny in and out.

You will probably end up as our "go to" transmission expert!

If you really get stuck. I suggest dropping the trans and taking it to a shop that knows transmissions. Preferably familiar with the 6 speed. It should not cost as much if you bring the trans to them. A good trans guy can build these things with their eyes closed and get it right every time. Sorry for not being able to offer anything substantive but this out of my realm.

ill try to post a picture tonight of the 4th gear blocker ring. i know for sure the first time i shimmed the trans i did it wron due to the wear pattern on the ring. although i thought i reshimmed it properly this time i think the keys are bad now so we'll see. i'm thankful its so easy to get to unlike some of the other gears.

in the pictures you can see where the keys were rubbing on the bottom of the ring because i had too much endplay. you can also see where the keys are supposed to sit and are worn down due to not lining up correctly making the grinding sound.

just got my tranny back together. come to find out the first time i put my trans together i shimmed it with too much end play causing the keys in the 3/4 syncro to be shaved down just enough not to hook into the 4th gear blocker ring. took me a good hour to replace the keys while the syncro was still in trans. i highly recommend when any one pulls their trans apart to upgrade to billet keys and not use the stock ones. everything works like a charm and is actually smoother shifting than before i tore it apart.
