help! trans trouble vette

Girl freind owns a 1986 c4 4+3 convertible----she lost all pressure on the clutch pedal ---took it to a shop---they replaced the master,slave cylinders---bench and gravity bleed the system----replaced the clutch,pressure plate, flywheel,throw-out bearing----the entire system several times and still had trouble----they finally got a pedal and it worked for less than 2 weeks-----is there something the shop is missing---they have tried everything----what gives with this anyone know or can help in this matter-----thanks Jim:mad:
 
Is fluid leaking from anywhere? Is it still topped off?
 
Could be bad seals within the slave and or master cylinder. . .
 
no fluid leaks and the hydraulic parts have been replaced 2 times....
 
Thanks Kevan ---but I don't golf anymore:)----This vette thing is beging to really piss me off ----and that takes a lot of doing----it's aready cost my girl freind almost 2 grand for a bunch of parts changing without knowing the true cause.....on a teachers salary , she couldn't afford that
 
Sure the clutch fork isn't bent?
 
i'll have them check the fork when it gets to the shop----it's being towed there today----thanks ROZ and you met the guy at brats gtg

Yes you did ---except for the tuxedo;)----was a great gtg and my first---glad to have met everyone there...
 
After reading on the Corvette Forums, some dudes on there are saying that it helps if you dismount the slave and bleed while it's at a 45* angle . . .

The clutch hydraulics use DOT 3 brake fluid. Here is the GM recommended way to bleed the clutch.
1. Fill the master cylinder reservoir with new brake fluid.
2. Raise the vehicle.
3. Remove the clutch slave cylinder.
4. Hold the slave cylinder at a 45 degree angle with the bleeder at the highest point, depress the clutch pedal and open the bleeder.
5. Close the bleeder and release the clutch pedal.
6. Repeat 4 and 5 until there is no more air in the clutch hydraulic system.
Check and refill master cylinder as required during bleeding to prevent the entry of air into the system.​


Be aware the C4 clutch is a bitch to bleed all the air out!!!! My mechanic finally gave up and I drove the car with a spongy clutch pedal, although it worked ok. On the 5th morning, the clutch pedal got hard and has been ok since. I would recommend a pressure bleeder on the master cylinder. If you do it as directed, have someone push hard on the clutch and open the bleeder wide to allow rapid fluid movement to move the air along. I personally think it best to supply fluid into the open bleeder and pull a vacuum at the master cylinder because air naturally wants to move to the highest point in the sytem, it doesn't want to move downward ANYWHERE in the system!​

AND some dudes are stating that had to MAKE a longer clutch rod . . . ?

Jim, after more reading, it appears that bleeding the systems seem to be everyone's culprit. It sounds like you gotta hold your mouth just right and click your heels three times, but it can be done. Seems that holding the slave @ 45* so the bleeder is at the top (facing up) is the trick. . .

I can start a thread on the Corvette Forum for ya if you need - see if anyone chimes in with some other suggestions. . .
 
Thanks Roz --it's back in the shop ---and is going to be looked at today ---I'm getting ready to head there and check the status----hopefully they will have some good news---i started thread on a corvette forum ---not a lot of replies----c4's must be to old for that crowd hahahaha
 
Got it back again made a hell of a thumping noise under acceleration felt like the center console and the seat I was sitting in was going to eject me from the car -the next morning no clutch again---back to the shop it went--all parts have been changed and bleed to hell, no leaks according to the shop from the previous visit----Girlfriend has not heard a word from them in almost a week....

I agree Roz ---it is to the point of rediculous---except for the fact that the girlfreind is getting ready to go full psycho----nobody on 2 corvette forums have any idea either, I believe all of them must pay to get all their work done.....are there any corvette gear heads anywhere that might have come across this freaky type of thing....would the trans mount being left un fastened cause the clutch to go out of adjustment---it sure sounds like the trans is smashing into the floor board.....shit I'm at a loss-

I have "read" (no first hand experience) that anything but the GM slave/master is "crap". I'm not sure if you're putting GM parts on it or not. I've read that the majority of the aftermarket units have bad seals, internally. It's allowing the fluid to stay within the system, so it won't actually leak, but in turn, when you press the pedal, it's just one big sponge. The bad seals are allowing the fluid to be contained within the lines and everything, but with no pressure . . .

Stange shit though. :(

About the thud sounds, could be bad U-joints. . . ?
