Truck lost all but like 1% of power goin down the road the other day. Towed it to dealership and now they're telling me the problem is.. "faulty 02 Sensors caused the truck to run rich clogging the catalytic converter." here's my problem: The catalytic converter is covered under warranty however, They're claiming 2x 02sensors will be 500$ to repair, 100$ each + 300$ install. Is this as much of a rip off as I think it is? some websites are showing them at 20-50$ a piece and I can just get the truck towed right back to me n fix her myself. 2nd part of the big Q here: What should I be looking for if I'm going to buy my own sensors? What's the diff between 2, 3, and 4 wire? are the sensors wired in or plugged in (do I have to cut em?) Most diagrams I'm seeing show plugged, but the truck's not here and I just wanted to be certain. anybody who knows anything would help a lot here... oh yeah lastly, is there any diff between the 4 types of sensors? (right/left pre-cat right/left post-cat?)

$300 to install two 02 sensors sounds like a bit much considering they are replacing the cats. I believe the 02 sensors have to be taken out when changing the cats anyways. The truck should be ok running the 10-15 miles I would just take it easy and change them in the driveway. The sensors just unscrew out and screw new ones in and plug them back in.

This site has your legal rights
http://www.epa.gov/oms/consumer/warr95fs.txt

It states that your O2 Sensors are an emission control part that is required to be replaced under warranty.

EPA says you can replace your cats at 8 yrs 80,000 miles or when they are faulty. Just get any hi-flow cats with the C.A.R.B. Exemption Order number, and your manufacturers warranty will still be covered

I got my O2's from O-Reilly's last month. They are bosch. I think i paid $42 total for both of them. Any muffler shop will put them in for you for $20-$25 bucks

Damn, WHere do you live. If your close ill come on out for lunch n some brews to replace me.

$300  Thats insane. Even at $100 an hour thats 3 hours. No way does it take that long.

20 min to jack up
20 min to change
20 min unjack.

MAX

Just my $.02

If the OEM cats and mids are being replaced, I would opt to have all four O2's replaced. Did you get any CEL's indicating a problem with the O2's found to be faulty? $300.00 to replace two O2's is a tad bit steep IMO.

thanks for quick replies guys. Would changing all 4 sensors be practical here? are these things bound to fry soon? (44k mi on the truck) If so, are these sensors all easy to get to? Autozone carries bosch replacements for 26$ a piece.. all 4 for what the dealership was gonna charge me for 1 sounds like a deal and I have no problem puttin in the time.

I live in orlando, fl - sort of the east side of town. I'd be more than happy to provide beer/pizza if anyone's got the tools to lift these trucks. I really dont have a jack big enough or stands or anything really which means the ol "leave the tag on and take it back the next day" trick is the plan so far.

I had my O2 sensors changed by my dealer about a month ago...he charged me $75 parts and labor...if I were you I would never take my truck or any vehicle to your dealer again...those prices were not just high they were immorally high...

thats exactly how I feel. just so every soul in central Fla knows - it's Greenway Ford/Dodge Chrysler Jeep on E colonial so please dont give them any business. When I called back and told them just fix the cats then I'm gonna have it towed off the lot the guy's attitude instantly changed... he kinda started mumbling and was just like w/e. Also told me truck would only make it a mile down the road w/o replaced 02 sensors and it HAD to be done.

I had Lee Chrysler in Fort Walton Beach tell me i needed an emergency throttle body cleaning, and it would be $375 bucks. Told me i should park it and not drive it until it was done.

Did you ask him why he's charging you, if he has to take them out anyway to put them on the new cat. Talk to the service manager.

I was always told that if you're replacing the cats, replace the O2's as build up of chemical deposits or carbon on the O2 sensor element caused by the failed cat (or normal usage/time) may lengthen the O2 response time, which may cause other driveability problems or possible or erroneous CEL's, e.g. cat efficiency. At $26 bucks a shot, replacing all four may be the right way to go.

Damn, replace the cats at 80K,I better get them changed out,I'm sitting at
84K !!! :dontknow: If Mickey's interested in coming up to my place,we could do it in Melbourne, then it's only 1 1/2 hrs away !!!

Im closer than mickey is... Im 1hr away... I could change them for ya...
