The upstream O2 sensors have to be installed in the mids or the truck wont run right...it's the downstream sensors that will give the problem...their only function is to monitor the cats to make sure they are working properly...when there is no cat they set a code...wont affect how the truck runs you will just have the check engine light on....
Several different ways to fix them...you can try tying them to the frame and let them hang in the air..works for some trucks...
