I am looking for a new wireless system for my network. The present one has given up...

I have been using a Belkin Pre-N wireless system for a couple years, and it has been marginal...but I got by.

I am looking for something with a good range. I have a metal building about 300 feet away from the house (where the router is) and I need a pretty good signal out to that building.

The Pre-N system worked pretty good at first, but finally got to where I had to reset it any time I needed to use it, and finally it just quit working at all. I have a little music studio set up out in that building, and record on a computer out there, but I also like to get video out there to play along with, or even download lessons.

Does anyone have any ideas about the best way to go to get good service? I would think that things have improved quite a bit in the couple of years since I bought the old system, and I thought I would ask the experts on here before I wasted any money on something that is unsatisfactory.

Thanks in advance...

Lee

Thanks Big Dave,

I will read up on that and see if I can come up with something.

I have another building that is in between the house and the building that I want the service to...would a repeater go in that building and work ok?

I don't know. You may need to find a system that has provisions for an external antenna to pick up a signal outside the metal building. Another thought would be to run Cat 5 Ethernet cable to the metal building for your network. Not knowing your logistical setup you'd be the one to make that call. I'm guessing running cable to the building would probably give you your best speed and reliability. And it's probably cheaper than all the wireless equipment.

I would agree.... Run a cable out there to another hub inside the building (with a hub, you can plug in more than one computer, or setup another wireless relay). :)

As for the main system in the house.... I've always used Linksys. They are owned by Cisco (a very well respected commercial IT equipment company), and have never gave me any issues. Admin and Security settings are easy to use as well. Plus, they are easily purchased at Best Buy or other big-box stores.

Jake and Big Dave,

Thanks for the info.

You are absolutely correct in that a cat 5 cable would be the best...they will go up to 100 meters in length with no significant signal loss. I may end up going with the cable, but in the rocky soil I have here, it would be a pain in the ass to get it into the ground without a Ditch Witch or the like. I would also have to go aroung the building that is between the house and the final location, adding to the length.

Since the Pre-N system that was in use before was almost good enough...I was hoping that the range on these things had improved enough by now to suffice.

I found a Belkin model that C-net rated very well for the range and throughput, but I don't know about the longevity of Belkin since that is what I was using before it gave up the ghost. It lasted a couple of years, then pfft...

I appreciate the help, guys. I am going to keep digging. Or start digging.:D

Give it a try. Try the repeater in conjunction with the Belkin. It may be all you need.

I've heard that when Stinks string gets wet it goes limp and no amount of porn will fix it.:D:aetsch:

Sorry, to bring a "thread from the "dead", but I have a computer/wireless
question.
I updated the sortware (Trend Micro\Internet Security) on my Laptop in May 09.
When I'm at home on my laptop and connected to my wireless router via
wi-fi, I continue to get a pop up/warning screen saying:
"Unknown computers have connected to your network" (network last checked June21st, 2009)
X Do not trust / IP 123.456.4.234, no nme, ect.
This "pop up" page also gives me the options to block, trust, or do not trust/ warn my computer.
I have selected the "Block", and Do not trust", but still continue to get the pop up when I log in from home this way vs. using my air card.
I pulled the "properties" up on our wireless router via the laptop, and it does not match the my Trend Securities listed IP of the "hack"

I can assume that this is not my router communicating with my PC, since I have good connection/internet service:dontknow:
Is the problem in my Trend Micro settings?
My protection status against web threats is set to medium.
I closed the Trend Warning after any of the listed alternatives(block, do not trust) except Trust, and it only re-starts searching for a computer...
Poof...up with the warning again.:argh:

I also checked the IP's of nearby wirless routers that I see but I have them excluded...:dontknow:

TIA for any help
