"Answering a 127-year old constitutional question, the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to have a gun, at least in one’s home. The Court, splitting 5-4, struck down a District of Columbia ban on handguns."

Nice...and will have far reaching consequences in many states.

Comments from the majority opinion:

Quotes from the opinion:

“Logic demands that there be a link between the stated purpose and the command.”

“We start therefore with a strong presumption that the Second Amendment right is exercised individually and belongs to all Americans.”

“the most natural reading of ‘keep Arms’ in the Second Amendment is to “have weapons.”

“The term was applied, then as now, to weapons that were not specifically designed for military use and were not employed in a military capacity.”

“Putting all of these textual elements together, we find that they guarantee the individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation.”

“Thus, we do not read the Second Amendment to protect the right of citizens to carry arms for any sort of confrontation, just as we do not read the First Amendment to protect the right of citizens to speak for any purpose.”

“The prefatory clause does not suggest that preserving the militia was the only reason Americans valued the ancient right; most undoubtedly thought it even more important for self-defense and hunting.”

“It was plainly the understanding in the post-Civil War Congress that the Second Amendment protected an individual right to use arms for self-defense.”

Yea!!!! My faith is restored somewhat in the Supreme Court, about time!

Even though I am exempt from the gun laws, I think it is great that

everyones most important right is being restored.

It was a good day.... But, there is still much work to do. This battle-front is not going to go away, just because of this ruling. The Court (intentionally) left the ruling open-ended.... There will still be many States test the new statements by the Justices. And (unfortunately) the "meat" of the law in DC will not go away because of this decision.

But, a good day for freedom, non-the-less. :)

The Mayor of DC is speaking now... He is (reluctantly) going to allow "handguns in the home" for citizens (subjects) of Washington DC.... he also stated "Automatic AND SEMI-AUTOMATIC" handguns are STILL banned.... What do they expect them to have??? Looks like you will only be able to have a TC Encore (single shot http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/encorePistols.php) or maybe a 17th Century Blunderbuss (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blunderbuss) , or something. :dontknow:   On top of that, ALL guns will have to be REGISTERED with the city.... that way, they can swiftly come and confiscate them if they feel so inclined. :( Concealed carry, or storage in your vehicle or business is still fervently banned.

A good step in the right direction, but admittedly there's more work to do. The sunset on the '94 Assault Weapons Ban was likewise good news...

What happens when you allow concealed carry for law abiding citizens, like they did in Texas years ago?

Crime goes down. The bad guys don't like to pick as much on an likely armed general public.

And what happens when gun control goes off the deep end and guns are wrenched out of the hand of law abiding citizens, who comply, because, well they're law abiding citizens.

Crime goes up. Way up, like what happened in the Land of Oz (Australia)...

A somewhat gross oversimplification, but pertinent IMNSHO...

I think revolvers fall out of the definition of automatic and semi-automatic...

So he is taking the people of DC back to the frontier and the days of the six shooter...

Other than the Gatling Gun...does any one know of something that has more than six rounds in a revolver?

Only "Single Action" revolvers... Double Action revolvers could be construed as "Semi-Automatic"

The Smith and Wesson TRR8 .357mag (or .38spl) is a 8 round revolver w/ a accessory rail. Very nice piece, but it's a Double Action and could still be banned.

Here is a link to the actual ruling:

It's 157 pages long....

The lengths at which the government will go sometimes to craft words around the Supreme law of the land is incredulous. What sucks are the taxpayers in DC are paying the salaries of the lawyers that are working overtime and making big bucks no doubt to ensure they'll weasel out of this as best they possible can. Guarantee there will be a "test case" as soon as an otherwise law abiding citizen dumps some thug that has it coming. Texas, and a number of other states, got it right...
