High Octane Gas

Hey Guys...planning on getting the SCT tuner and some tunes. Been reading the recent threads. I can only get 91 Octane gas here. So far I haven't found any high octane outlet. So it don't make sense to me to pay for tunes like 96 and 100 if I can't find the gas.

What is it that I'm not understanding? Attempt to educate me, please.

To increase your octane you will need to mix 91 octane with some race fuel,unless you have lots of mods its kinda a waste IMO,your gains will be very minamal if any and your taking a big risk on detonation for MAYBE 10HP:dontknow:

The more octane the more timing can be added. I am sure you can find race gas some where near you. Probably at a speed shop. There is always octane booster too. Like yellow venom said. Unless you have alot of air running through your motor (fi, big heads and exh) then the gains will be minimal.

I'll try and find the review. But, there are two octane boosters that I know of, that supposedly work. Lucas and Torco. Kenne Bell actually recommends Torco.

You are correct...I read a several 3rd party tests on both the Lucas & Torco.....I use the Lucas because it is sold locally at several automotive stores...1 bottle of Lucas mixed with 10 gals will increase octane 3.6 numbers........mixed with 5 gals it increases 5.4.....I can tell a big difference between my 93 tune and the 100.

Dont be fooled by other octane boosters...if they claim an increase of 10 points you actually only have increased by 1 octane number. Takes 10 points to make 1 number.

I have wondered abut the lead in av gas. the 100ll is leaded. Theroretically woundn't that be harmful to valves or seats? Or do I have it backwards?:dontknow:

Not sure on valves and seats,but the leaded fuel will kill O2 sensors!

yeah kills 02's but GREAT for the rest of the engine. i have heard of one person previously that programed his ecu to use the EGT and MAF to control fuel, and used leaded from then on. it could be done.

Thanks for all the help guys. I do speak some racing, too. Built a couple of cars BITD.

I was trying to figure out how the tunes work with less than they are rated for octane.

Same question I guess....does it make any sense to buy tunes that you can't find gas for? There's one place in Missoula that keeps 20 gallon drums of 108 (I think that what the racers told me) but it's way pricey and I don't see that much gain for all that trouble....know whut I mean??

How could leaded gas be great on the engine??...burns dirty as heck...lead was used as a cheap way to raise octane and lube the valves but it is not needed anymore in a modern engine...

The way I understand lead is that it is a lubricant and is very good for valves and seats.

Yes, for pre-1972 vehicles....not needed for modern engines...just puts more junk in the oil & cylinder..
