My son hammered down the lid to the paint can and it sprayed paint onto my wifes car. How can I get it off?

I think water base. It was just some trim paint for some baseboards and closet doors.

Try some hot water first. Should loosen it up and it should peel off.

Stretch

paint splatter

Then it should come of with water and a fingernail....Just be patient, it'll come off........Maybe a little buffing compound after to restore the shine....

Ooops! me thinks you need to rethink that one lest you become one of the dread "wife puts husband in hospital" statistic :)

the warm soap and water should work - if not a clay bar certainly will - let us know if you need hospital room visitors for company

Well warm water didn't work. The paint could be oil based. Wife doesn't know and she already threw the can away. Some of the paint is on emblem also. Any help?

if the car is new i would try mineral spirits or laquer thinner not a lot, just dampen a rag and take a little off at the time. you dont want to get into the clear coat on the car. then if the clear is hazy after you get it off it should buff out. you just dont want to go through the clear to the paint on the car.

Try using a plastic scraper and saturate the area with mineral spirits. Once the spirits have had a chance to soak in, gently use the scraper on the spots.
Once the paint is off, buff the areas.
Use a small nail (brad) on the emblem to gently dig out the paint residue.

It's an 05. I worry about the spirits taking off the car paint. I guess I could try it.

The emblem is flat. It's the hood emblem for a BMW.

WAIT WAIT --

Try the method that will offer the least damage first -- to me, that would be:

Try goof-off or another tar/bug remover if no then
Try polishing compound SAFE for clear coat -- NuFinsh and Mequiars make excellent ones -- if no then
Try clay bar

I had some overspray all over the top my SRT from some clown at the dealer spraying something near it Dealer said -- "We'll buff it out" -- I said "Yeah right - NOT" -- I tried all three methods - the clay bar did the trick.

Anything stronger than Mineral Spirits will haze the surface in short order and worse if left on too long. About the time Thinner is beginning to lift the bad paint its already etching itself into the clear coat. Try the mineral spirits and if it doesn't work go with clay bar. Your clearcoat should have had some wax on it and besided the surface is pretty shiney thus making it tough for bad paint to adhere strongly. Should be easy to remove. Make sure you use a liquid in combination with the clay bar....i.e. water
