Just finished our first NASA Rocky Mountain road race event of the year (this time its wheel to wheel for points) with my fellow American Iron (AI) and Camaro-Mustang Challenge guys (CMC). I got my Provisional Race License with NASA as a Rookie...not exactly easy.

Last year I ran the SRT Ram in HPDE 3. In fact, the truck was running lap times about 2-3 seconds faster than my Mustang did today!

Best part of the day (after warm-ups and qualifying) was the Main Event. 35 minutes in what began as spits of rain turning into full blown snow while we're racing. There were 17 cars on the track (Mustangs, Camaros, Firebirds). Ever hear 17 V8 powered no exhaust beasts (American Iron allows many more mods) run down the straights from a rolling start? AWESOME!

I will say my 157 rwhp (stock) 2885 pound (with me in it) '86 Mustang was the slowest car on the track and I'm not ashamed to say pulled up the rear for last place...but I finished the 35 minute race and got points, experience, seat time, a bunch of new friends, etc.

Congrats on the good time Dave:rock: So what were the power restrictions again?

For CMC motor cannot exceed 230 horses at the crank and must weigh at least 3150 pounds. We were 157 at the wheels which isnt too far off from 230 at the crank...a bit short. My time was the slowest by 3-5 seconds from others in my group. Mind you, I'm still 265 pounds under weight, once I add balast, etc my times will get a bit slower.

As of right now, I'm in 5th place out of 8 cars (2 didnt race, 1 blew a motor) and one point behind 4th place. The key is to finish each main event race (1 warmup, 1 qualifying, 1 main event each saturday and sunday). If we place in the top 5 and at least 5 cars compete each weekend we get "Toyo bucks"...basically money from Toyo tires (our main sponsor) for future tire purchases.

We'll be in Pueblo again in May and July, Miller Motorsports Park (currently largest track in the country) in June, Hastings Motorsports Park (Hastings, NE) in August, and a new track scheduled to open in eastern Colorado in October.

My co-worker and teamate ran a 1:58.7 (minute 58.7 seconds) first time in the car compared to my 2:00.5 so I have room to improve.

Heres a video shot by one of the cars in our comp school. Notice there are 944's, Spec Miatas, CMC and AI cars, etc in the school. There are also veterans and instructors mixed in with us trying to distract us from running our lines, seeing how we react to traffic around us.
