Who here has hunted big game w/ 30-06? Im thinking this over 338 due to recoil. If so, what brand of the 30-06 would be better?

might be in the market :D if someone also has one 4 sale hehe

A 30-06 is probably the most popular big game caliber around here. Lot of bullet weights available to tune it for terrain and game type.

I've had my remmingten for almost ten years no problems gun was coated for anti rust love it. anything bigger than a mule deer I would move up to a .300 wetherby or somthing similiar same bullet bigger case :D

Big game, I had a 458lott before made by ruger#1. hell of a gun i must say. Or a 7mm rem mag is good for bigger game. 30-06 and 270 are almost same just different size bullet necked down in the same case.

30-06 as stated is a good all around calibre, wide variety of bullet weights, and despite what people say good for any game in north america from deer to moose or bear. I shoot a 300 WSM which is an awesome gun, does a good bit of damage though to a deer size target, but easily takes down elk, moose, and bear. Really whatever kind of rifle you go with they are all really nice. I have a remington 700, a tikka t3, and a browning a-bolt all nice guns. As for recoil with todays gun it can be as easy as putting on a good recoil pad such as a limbsaver pad, or a muzzle brake makes even a bigger difference. One nice thing with the 30-06 that one usually doesn't think about is you can pretty much walk into any store and they carry 30-06 bullets where as other calibres sometimes can be harder to find.

30-06 is a good all around caliber. It has been said that the 30-06 caliber is the jack of all trades and master of none. As for deer, Elk...etc, the 30-06 will kill anything you put a quality shot on:D As for long range shooting, their are better calibers out there that will perform better than the 30-06 with similar powder loads as well as a lower grain bullet. But with all the speculation aside, it's all about what works for you.

Thanks for all the great info !! Learning something new everyday...now to find the right one / brand

Define "Big Game".

The 30-06 is fine for deer, but for larger animals like elk, and hard to kill like bear, I preferred the 7MM Mag.

But then I have always felt that "bigger was better". :D

I'd go with a Remington 700 personaly if I was getting a 30-06. Great caliber been used for years. Ammo is fairly inexpensive and you can find it everywhere. Pat what kind of hunting are you gonna do with it? Deer it's a lil heavy unless you get some lighter loads.

dont get anything too big, shot a deer with a 300 ultra mag and had very little meat left.
try a 308. hunt once a year and have fun target shooting the rest, accurate to 800 yards +/-
if it can kill a man it can kill a deer.

I have a Browning safari II 30.06 auto and I love it. May consider getting rid of it due to my hunting and financial situation.

Well thats just about all of them :D , But i agree with you, To big of a round will just tear apart the deer into shreds.

Had a 460 Weatherby Magnum that I had to sell a few months ago. But since there are no Elephants, or Cape Buffolo here in Michigan I guess it wasn't going to get much use anyway.

Bill.

Don't they have a zoo in Detroit?:dontknow:  :D

i hunt with a weatherby vanquard in 30-06. got it 13 years ago. had it duracoated so it wouldnt rust. also had it pillar bedded and and the action timed and trued. its my go to gun. ive got friends that have taken down elk and bear with 30-06. bullet placement makes a difference.

First ask yourself (honestly) what it is your going to use this gun for MOST.
Then at what range your going to be (on average) taking your shots at.
Then look up average ballistic sharts to see where your FPS/ ft/lbs lie at your average shooting distance. Do not forget relative elevation and average temperaures...they do affect ballistics.
As stated...the 30-06 is one of the most versatile rounds produced...and is great for any American big game animal. I would also consider the .308...much less recoil...damn near identical #'s. Ammo is slightly cheaper as well.
I have a Remington 700 SPS Tactical coming in a week...in .308.
Savage is making a hell of a nice rifle as well...I shot one with the Accutrigger...and we were just rounding out the same hole in the target...shot after shot @ 100 yds.

It is sweet...and it was a hell of a toss up between that and the Remington...I have a friend (retired Spec Ops) that can get me a hell of a price on the Remington...and the accessories for it are limitless. I do believe the Savage will out shoot the Remington...the Savage also has the new free floated barrel/Accustock to finish off the gun. Like I said...a real nice shooter...not bad for 625$. Funny...the best price I found it at...Walmart...with a one week turn around time after ordering.:dontknow:
Not going to make huntcamp this year Eddie...I got problems.:(
