First ask yourself (honestly) what it is your going to use this gun for MOST.
Then at what range your going to be (on average) taking your shots at.
Then look up average ballistic sharts to see where your FPS/ ft/lbs lie at your average shooting distance. Do not forget relative elevation and average temperaures...they do affect ballistics.
As stated...the 30-06 is one of the most versatile rounds produced...and is great for any American big game animal. I would also consider the .308...much less recoil...damn near identical #'s. Ammo is slightly cheaper as well.
I have a Remington 700 SPS Tactical coming in a week...in .308.
Savage is making a hell of a nice rifle as well...I shot one with the Accutrigger...and we were just rounding out the same hole in the target...shot after shot @ 100 yds.
