Hunting w/ 30.06

Had a 460 Weatherby Magnum that I had to sell a few months ago. But since there are no Elephants, or Cape Buffolo here in Michigan I guess it wasn't going to get much use anyway.

First ask yourself (honestly) what it is your going to use this gun for MOST.
Then at what range your going to be (on average) taking your shots at.
Then look up average ballistic sharts to see where your FPS/ ft/lbs lie at your average shooting distance. Do not forget relative elevation and average temperaures...they do affect ballistics.
As stated...the 30-06 is one of the most versatile rounds produced...and is great for any American big game animal. I would also consider the .308...much less recoil...damn near identical #'s. Ammo is slightly cheaper as well.
I have a Remington 700 SPS Tactical coming in a week...in .308.
Savage is making a hell of a nice rifle as well...I shot one with the Accutrigger...and we were just rounding out the same hole in the target...shot after shot @ 100 yds.

I collect rounds of all sorts, Have a lighted safari case i made. I just need a few how much you want, I have a 458 lott round in there now as my biggest, I want to get a 577 tran and some nitro 600 and 700 <- big money there. Never shot a 460 but I heard the recoil is like 2 times of the 458 rem and 458 lott. What would you say :rock:

patrick make sure and hold one. if your gonna do a lot of walking and stalking, take the weight into account. you wouldnt want to treck with a heavy barrelled gun

1. 500 gr Full Metal Jacket in the old style box.

2. 500 gr Round Nose in the new style box.

3. 500 gr Round Nose in the old style box.

4. 450 gr Barnes X Bullet in the new style box.

The 500 gr Cartridges are $75.00 per box of 20.

308 is my favorite round for whitetail or mule deer under 250 yards. I have a nice short barreled gun that is easy for me to use in a climber or to carry if I have to do a lot of walking.

For larger animals or if I know I'm going to be shooting long shots I shoot a Remington 7mm mag. I had the barrel bedded, trigger lightened up, muzzle break, and that thing will drive tacks.

I've shot some bigger guns that I've borrowed from guys I hunt with but for what I shoot I don't need any more than the 7 mag. If you really get into hunting big game look into reloading your own. One of my buddies did mine and I can tell a difference.

correct thats a very fast bullet, I think the 204 ruger is faster tho.

As in what??? Hunting round or all around. Kinda hard to find around here, It is a nasty round tho. alot of people I work with use 223 or 270-30.06
