I figured I'd post this since a lot of people from SC post here. Well, my wife and I have been talking for a while about moving to South Carolina. We live in Western Pennsylvania, which is a shitty place. Most people who live here were born here (like us). This isn't a place where people generally tend to want to move to.

We both like SC, Charleston specifically. My wife has an accounting degree and is a cost accountant at a company here. Do you think she'll find a job easily in Charleston? I'm a pavement contractor so I'll do fine down there. I've already worked there a little in Myrtle Beach so I'm used to the area.

In the long run, do you think a move to the Charleston area would be smart? I'd really like to hear from someone who actually lives near there who can give me their honest opinion. At any rate, I could drive the truck without hitting potholes and getting stuck in drizzle every time I take it out! I know that for sure!

Can say for sure the roads are better in South Carolina. Don't know a whole lot about the job market. I live in Aiken county and the job market isn't that great here right now. I can tell you there are a lot of northerners moving down here though.

ton of paving companies in charleston, you may even consider the surrounding areas of columbia SC.
Charleston has pretty good job opportunities , but columbia or florence may offer more options.
Your wife has pretty much open options, accountants can do good almost anywhere.
But the reason I say columbia is it is growing fast, charleston .....is just charleston, it hasnt changed too much:D

Just depends if ya want city life, or a nice calm set back anddrink a beer life:D

hey you jacked my thread....

I just came back from Pittsburg, PA, and I was pretty impressed with that city. Really clean, nice people, and seems like plenty of employment. Heck I was thinking about moving up to there......

two weeks and I will be in Maggie Valley NC, I have been a captain in the oilfield making 500 bills a day, now I am going to be a handy man for 9 bucks a hour. I really hope something opens up for me in the heavy equipment . but if not OWELL. I do plan on doing alot of snowboarding and white water rafting. And I will get to be with the wife and dogs every night. My brother is moving up soon and we are going to get another sprint car and play in the dirt

SEEYA FL I am out of here:burnout: :burnout: :burnout:

Columbia is up and coming, and close to Augusta, Ga. (Where I grew up)

Charleston is beautiful, but the cost of living may be higher than in Columbia. From Columbia you could easily contract in Augusta, which is growing rapidly!

Oil fields are going strong here in Oklahoma. With the price of oil, they are reopening wells, and drilling new one dailey. Haven't seen that since the early 80's.

Myrtle Beach - Crowded although it has it's seasons. Right now it's not too bad. Summer time is bumper to bumper. Charleston - crowded all the time. My sister lives in Mt. Pleasant just north of Charleston up hwy 17. Lots of traffic. Use to live in Columbia but don't have an idea what it's like now. I do know that the road that lead out to the area I lived use to be country road. Now it's all businesses and shopping all the way out. I didn't recognize my turnoff last time I went through there.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? Dude, the job market is DEAD here. College grads leave here as soon as they graduate because they can make twice as much in any field somewhere else. If you're self employed like I am, it's not bad. Actually for my business, this is a prime location. I seal blacktop driveways and parking lots, so even though I hate the winter it makes more work for me every spring. Another good business to be in here is mental health. There's a lot of pathological people here.

Downtown Pittsburgh itself is sort of pretty and somewhat clean, but the suburbs are in absolute ruin. And even downtown you'll be hard-pressed to find anything to do aside from go to a bar or a shitty chain restaurant. The fact of the matter is that Pittsburgh is going down the toilet incredibly fast. Just do a little research online and you'll see what I mean. The city's bankrupt, property taxes are insane, and the infrastructure is falling apart at the seams. It's not a nice place.

I live about 35 miles east of that toilet in neighboring Westmoreland county (thank God), but we've got a whole different set of problems here. For one, there's a HUGE heroin epidemic here that's ruining this area. I live just across the lake from where I attended high school not even 15 years ago. There's a bus that arrives at the school every morning at 10:00 to drop off the kids who go to the methadone clinic every morning. Last I heard there's about 50 kids on that bus, but that was last year so I'm sure there's more now. But just think...if there's 50 kids on methadone that go to that school (there's about 700 students at that school all together) imagine how many kids there are ON the stuff and not getting "help". It's sad to see that happen in small town America.

It's amazing how bad things have got since I went to school there. The worst drugs kids did back then was pot, maybe a little coke and some binge drinking. But heroin? So yeah. That's western PA. Google "Derry PA" and "Heroin" and you'll see what I mean.

Just remember, SC is hurricane alley. Take this into consideration when purchasing a home.

I think Hurricane Hugo was the last major hurricane but they get hit in that area pretty regularly!!

Other than that it is a beautiful place. Our company is located there, If you go we have need for finished concrete from time to time!!

Let me know!

I was only there for a day visiting some friends over Thanksgiving. He retired from the Army, and he now working at a plant on the Ohio river in WV. He bring down over 100K a year. He lives on the border of PA, WV, and Ohio, and it didn't look all that bad.

But I don't live there, and you do, so you would know better than myself.

From what you say, he lives in or near Stubenville. That's a decent area. It's close somewhat to the airport, and it's a little nicer out in that direction.

Ya, he lives between Washington, and Wheeling. about 45 minutes from the Airport. He hates his neighbors, but it a somewhat nice. It funny what they call country and what we call country.

He kept telling me, Ya we live in the country. It not the city, but it not country. He needs to make a trip back out west and really get the definition of "Country"....

The job market for an accountant and a paving contractor, hmmmm.....CHARLOTTE, NC. We are the second largest banking center in the country, only behind New York City (sorry ATL). The economy is booming, real estate is APPRECIATING, the banking industry is growing here evrey day with Wachovia and Bank of America in their "mine's bigger than yours" fight. We have begun construction of a new $2 bil light rail line, with local government giving incentives for development around the rail lines. Billions of dollars in new roads and retail projects planned for the next 10 years. New skyscrapers being designed and ground broken almost monthly now. NASCAR Hall of Fame under construction (sorry ATL), Lowe's Motor Speedway, a new 1/4 mile 4 lane dragstrip under construction, 5 1/8th mile tracks within an hour, Rockingam 1.5 hours out. New pharmaceutical R&D campus being built in the suburbs. Lakes Norman, Wylie, and Mountain Island within minutes......I can go on, but I won't.

The taxes are out of control in NC, and even more so in Charlotte. Somebody has to pay for all this growth. SO...York County, SC. Ten minutes to Charlotte and you can have a cow if you want one. Country living 20 miles from the big time, without the stupid taxes. Guess where we're building our straw bale house? I moved here from Philly 10 years ago, you could'nt pay me to go back.

Went to college in Columbia at U of South Carolina...........cool town but hot in the summer for sure. Then moved to Sullivans Island, which is just north of Charleston and Mt Pleasant..........that was awesome. I found the town very freindly, sorta clicky with the old money and people there but still very nice. Cost of living is cheap IMO and the weather is hot during the summer but somewhat better at the beach where I lived.

I would think the quality of life is way better than where you are now. North and South Carolina seem to growing with transplants a lot these past 20 years.
