Is the National Guard the same as Army Reserves? I thought they were two different things. I always thought the National Guard was closer to a state militia type of thing.

Bob,

The National Guard is different than Army Reserves. However, both fall under the United States Army.

The main difference (simplified) is that the Reserves generally fall under the direct command and control of mother army and the National Guard generally falls under the command and control of the State.

There are some exceptions though. Special Forces for example....all part time units are now National Guard (no more Army Reserve SF units). They fall under the state for administrative purposes but their missions and funding (in certain areas) are controlled by active duty Special Forces Command. I could explain further but I'd probably bore every one to death. :D

Hope this helps.
