I have a pretty nasty infection in my thumb.I accidentally (like I would actually TRY to do this) stuck a dirty exacto blade into my thumb joint Thursday night,not just a little,I buried it.I believe it hit the joint because clear,thick, almost jelly-like stuff shot out when I removed the blade.I know it was dirty because I used it to pry out a tiny rock from from my knee that had become infected the day before and I had not yet cleaned it.

By Friday afternoon it was swelling and getting more sore.I have had fever and chills.It is hot to the touch and very tender.I have taken 12 ibuprofen today and the pain can only be described as terrible.The ER doc gave me doxycycline (?) last night (SAT) and said it was cellulitis and I would be fine by Monday.Well,it seems to be getting progressively worse to me (more pain,more swelling,more tender).

I plan to go to my regular doctor tomorrow,but in the meantime,any ideas or suggestions ?

just opened it and squeezed out yellow pus and LITTLE white chunks YUK !!!!!!!

I learned about using vinegar 30 years ago. A friend of my dad had a small scratch on his leg turn into an out of control infection. The doctors tried everything but his scratch turned into a hole the diameter of a half dollar. This went on for weeks. The doctors finally said he would probably have to have his leg amputated.

My dad had another freind that was a doctor at Duke University research Hospital. He got into Duke for an examination..The doctor there told him to use vinegar. Within 10 days the wound had almost completely healed..

had one get infected, swollen up bad, opened it up , same thing, puss like crazy , but felt better

it is WAY too deep for that ,though
it seems to be right in the joint itself
pain is just awful,and I can take a lot of pain
swelling is spreading further up my hand

let it drain , but you need to get to the doc bo ,if the infection speads too far it can be really really bad really bad

I am going to my regular doc first thing in the morning,hopefully IV antibiotic
and maybe he can open it up

if not I may have to

I know how bad it can get,it killed my sister when she ignored an infection in her foot

seriously...i bet a lot of the pain/infuction could be from a chip of bone...did you check to see if there was anything "else" in that cavern .... you only have about 24 hrs. before you can't get stitched up...coincidentally...so as NOT to sew any infection inside the wound...

so i guess that's out if it's sunday nite....

I think that is part of the problem,the Exacto blade is so tiny that it can't drain effectively.I am pretty sure it hit the middle of the joint,so it went deep,but just a small opening.When I first drained it,I had to pick the entrance wound open,but then a LOT of stuff got out.The nurse at the ER said "Don't do that again!" yeah,right

oh yeah...if you are gonna self drain...make sure your tools are clean...at least rinse them with alcohol or something

My Bro did this and let the infection get to far and the DOC said one more day and they would have had to cut his arm off at the elbow.. Dont take it to lightly these infections can get bad quick.. He got lucky and is ok.. But dammit be carefull

This keeps going through my head.... Glad I am not going to bed now I would have nightmares!
