Info on 4.88 gear conversions

its been harder and harder to get the 4.88 gears latley,

and well just got off the phone with unitrax, and he is def having a hard time finding the carriers for the conversion.

so i guess what I am looking at is not sure how long the 4.88 conversion will be offered.

but will try to see about an alternative, if anyone has any insite , jsut shout.

Dont say that, I want to do this as soon as I can get some questions answered about what special skills my mechanic would need to do the job. I dont have many specialty places around here so tell me what I need to ask my mechanic to feel comfortable with the swap????????

basically most shops can do the sway, if he has ever set up a gear set ,(ring and pinion) he can do the swap.

Anybody that has ever set up a GM 12 bolt can do this on our trucks. I would highly recommend using set-up bearings to get everything right before pressing on the bearings you are going to use. At least for the carrier, the inner pinion bearing is pretty easy to get back off for any shim adjustments.

if you cant do it ,,it is cheaper to go to a 4 wheel drive outfit and have them do the swap ,,it will be cheaper too,than a stealership

Yepper, and I appreciate it. I still can't believe the difference between the 56s and 88s. Just need to get the front end sorted out, and I'll be good.
