So a while back I had this weird metal vibration/rattle noise coming from somewhere. It's not from the engine bay or to the best of my knowledge is not the engine bay. It's more towards under the door. The only problem is I can't get a video of it because it's sporadic, it'll only do it every now and then for a few seconds. It's kind of faint, the regular engine noise is louder than the vibration but when sitting in traffic it kind of echoes off cars. From talking to a few guys and posting here, I took off inspected my heat shields then replaced them, which I had thought fixed it, and checked to see if the exhaust was tight it in most of the places I could see. I did it in Fall when I went from windows down everyday to windows up. It's finally warm enough to leave the windows down everyday and I noticed it a week or so ago. So I don't know if I for sure ever fixed it to start with or not. I did however finally catch it on camera last night! Pulled up next to a brick wall and noticed it was there and whipped out the ol' cellular device and caught it. Here's the video:

You can hear it kind of in the background this is me holding my cellphone out the window towards the wall. It's noticeable for the first 5-8 seconds then dies off.

Same symptoms as before:

-Very random: I can drive for days and it never happen or it'll happen at every other light
-Only at idle: I've never heard it while moving
-It goes away after 10-15 seconds
-It doesn't come from under the hood, the few times it's happened in the drive way I jump out open the hood and it doesn't sound like its coming from the engine bay, it literally sounds like it comes from the cats but wouldn't it be constant if it were?
-Doesn't idle rough or anything when it does happen
-Never happens when it's cold, it's only after the engine has warmed up

The one shop I took it too said it was exhaust when I took him for a ride and finally had it do it. He said it sounded like a loose exhaust pipe but when he got done there and felt around he said he couldn't find which one it was. He'd have no problem holding my truck till he could get it replicated in the shop and see if he could find it "Ummm no...". Does anyone know what it could possibly be?

I know some of you guys will say it's faint and last for so little just deal with it. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me and when it echoes off other cars it drives me nuts!

I was going to post, possible exhaust piece loose but you said that was inspected. If you have access, I'd get it up on a lift and poke around myself. If I couldn't find anything loose or wrong, I wouldn't worry about it.

Hope you find the issue.

That sounds like a rock or something rattling in a shield or somewhere look under it and see if there is

I need to see if I can find a lift somewhere that'll let me get under it....

We have a lift at work but last time I talked to our tech he said it'll only raise off the ground a whole foot or foot and a half which won't help me any haha

my first thought was possibly a loose ground effect?

Yea it's hard to explain but I think it's the same sound you have. It'll happen sometimes in reverse, it's a quick one though instead of a constant till it dies off like when at a stop light. It's a quick one if your not expecting it you'd probably miss it kinda thing going on

Do you have a cam? My truck makes a rattle like that from 2-3k rpms under a load and the mechanic i took it to checked my lifters and listened to the bottom end with a stethoscope and said he couldnt hear any abnormal noises and that it may just be the cam causing a little bit of valve float. :dontknow:

No sir I do not.

That I do not sir, all stock engine wise. I have a few days off coming up, I'm going to go over every bolt and inch of the exhaust.

Found the perp, seems we have a heat shield that has crapped the bed... Anyone have a part number or can point me to a replacement

Crawl underneath right next to your tire look straight up and thump the heat shield on the exhaust manifold right above the cat. It should replicate the noise your hearing I know mine vibrated for 15-20 seconds AFTER I thumped it.
