Any thoughts on Jeep Cherokees and Wranglers? I'm looking into getting a "around town-commuter" vehicle, until I get back on my feet. :dontknow:

I always liked Cherokees (Like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2000...10QQihZ003QQcategoryZ6281QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem )

I had a '86 for a while and it had a bunch of issues.... I think they got most of that worked out, by the end of the production run. :dontknow: And I do like that they are smaller, yet have lots of room inside.

Looking at Wrangler's too. They have universal appeal down here in FL. So, a nice one would be easy to sell when the time comes. :) I know they ride rough, and handle worse..... I don't care about that. :p I just don't know what kind of issues to look for when buying a used one (1998-2006). :dontknow:

Whadda you guys think? :dontknow:

I drive a 92 Cherokee, daily. Its pushing 300k miles. I even beat on it in the woods sometimes. I love it!

I test drove a 06 Wranger Unlimited Saturday. . . Jeeps are amazing! I know several folks with Jeeps and they love em.

When AMC owned Jeep, they sucked. Since Mopar owns them, Jeeps took a turn for the better!

I have an '05 Grand Cherokee Limited with a 5.7 in it and honestly it's my favorite car to drive. I installed a custom air intake and a magnaflow set-up and it reacted very positively. Anyways, I get about 19 on the highway with it. It's super comfortable and the ride is great. But it's a Jeep and it does have some issues. The tranny is a weak point but it's not that bad. You can pick up a different model (Laredo) for a fair price. I don't think you'll get killed on the resale too bad, either.

My 2000 GC (similar to the Cherokee) has had a laundry list of issues over the past 12 months (all started around 75K).

2 tie rod ends
Water pump
Rear pinon seal
Passenger front door power lock (guess this is common)
Driver front window motor (have to buy the entire regulator)
Rotors (OK that is normal wear stuff) but there was a class action lawsuit over the rotors.
Front tweater were trash, had to replace.

Things I do not like

Rear head rests rattle (I removed them)
The 4.0 six has a noisy valve train, almost sounds like a diesel.
Avg 16.3 MPG with the six (That six is outdated)

Things I like

Infinity Gold radio system sounds great for a factory DC product. (once I replaced the tweaters)
4x4 works great, no issues going places in this SUV.

Oh, it is for sale :)

I'm a jeep fan, love them....both are fairly solid vehicles, easy to mod, and easy to work on....my experience with them has been good overall, and found them to be very reliable....also, Wranglers have great resale...

With that being said, they get crappy mileage and aren't that comfortable...

IMHO, you'd be better off with a small 4-door 4 cylinder commuter if you really wanna save some cash at the pump or on insurance....

Thanks for all the info, guys.

BARRY- That Willys is f*ckin' SWEET! :congrats:

WALT- How's the new '07 3.8 motor compare to the old 4L? Same/More power and torque? :dontknow: I like the color on that one. :)

OHIO- I feel your pain on the Grand Cherokee... I had a '98 GC 5.9 Limited (only made them one year). I LOVED that truck, but it had almost the exact same issues at around 75k miles. (Ball joints, U-joints, Pinion Seal, and Steering Pump) :dontknow:  I ABUSED that thing tho. ;) ....... The only reason why I wouldn't buy another one is the 4WD system. I like to be able to SWITCH between 4wd OR 2wd, not "AWD" all the time. :(

Love my XJ (Cherokee)

The 2.5 is gutless but Ive seen many many go 200k+ miles,

the 4.0 straight six is a torque monster...

It makes a good daily beater.....oops, I mean driver :D

LOL! I think Imma need a cage like that for driving around TOWN, here in FL. :D :p People are freakin' NUTS over here.

Damn fine lookin' crawler you got there, Red. (But, for GAWD'S SAKE, put a harness in that thing.... "It's all fun and games, 'till you get stuck between a rock and a running truck." ;) )

Oh, and the classic "If you can read this, flip me over" sticker is righteous as well.... LOL!

I think it revs higher but not as much Torque.....and I hate the stability control on the 07...it sucks and kicks in all the time....when your 4-wheel drive you can defeat it so no issue there....The 05 I had did not have it and I really liked it.....The 07 cuts the gas and puts on the brakes around a corner when it feels your going too fast......hell you can't even take it out in the snow in 2-wheel drive a fishtail in a parking lot :dontknow: ....other than that I like it.

Sounds like too much "Big Brother" for me. ;) That's what made Jeeps so cool too... You always had a lever to pull, or button to push, so you could get rid of all that shit. :(

They (the '07s) do look nice tho! And, I'm sure someone will come up with a way to defeat "Big Bro" for them soon. ;)

And, yes... I made it. ;)

Nice!

Yeah, I used to build Stuff for the jeeps as a hobby and sold some fabrication stuff while working. Got too busy @ work, so had to stop it....more of a hobby then anything :)

Still have all the stuff though.. Tubing bender, welder, plasma cutter, etc...
