JMB catch can maintanence

ok, so I have this catch can installed. I expect it to fill up with crank case vapors, oil, condensation and such. How do you drain it? Just open that valve and let gravity drain that crap out? Or, do you remove the catch can from CAI shield and drain it outside the vehicle. I would expect this fluid is some nasty stinky stuff.

Well..... I just took mine off the CAI shield and opened it up a few days ago. There wasn't anything in there, and it's been on the truck for 5 months. :dontknow: The K&N breather that is on the can is soaked with oil tho. I guess it just atomizes and evacuates through that.

But, I would still take the can out of the truck to drain it tho. If there is something in there, it could make a real mess.

I have a small plastic cup that I trimmed down (about 1" high) to 'slide' underneath the valve. I empty the funk/gunk into that then slide the cup out the front of the airbox.
This is done every fill up.

Jake (and other catch can owners):
Check to make sure the valve on your catch can hasn't clogged. With all the nasties that come from there, it's easy for it to stop up.
Mine did, and on my trip back from Boston, the K&N...ahem...."farted" everything into the engine bay.

If it is clogged, a quick shot with an air hose into the valve should clear it.

Top shelf of my tool box.

Each time I get back to the house after a fill up, the hood gets popped and the cup comes out (after the engine bay cools, of course ).

The contents of the cup are then poured into the oil change tray.
Cup gets wiped down and put back in the tool box.

It's pretty high tech. I should probably take some pictures and post them.

Maybe I should make a new thread, but since the catch can install, I have noticed an occasional smelll of 'vapors', 'odors' getting into the truck. Anybody else having this? Did I intall something wrong?

Did you cap off the outlet at the back of the throttle body?
All hoses are solid (no leaks or rips/tears/holes)?
All connections are tight?
Catch can valve is closed?

It's coming from the K&N breather on the catch can. It's normal (I asked this too, a while ago, in another thread. )

If 'closed' is parallel to the ground, then yes, I am closed. I don't recall 'capping the back of the throttle body'. I did cap the underside the of the intake manifold. Yes, all hoses are solid, no rips, tears, or leaks.

Hmmm... Mine doesn't "stink" :dontknow: But, then again.... I am kinda partial to the smell of hot oil and fuel. :dontknow: :rock:

Yes. That's the closed position.

I don't recall 'capping the back of the throttle body'. I did cap the underside the of the intake manifold.

Sorry. I should have said "the hole under the intake manifold right behind the throttle body". My bad.

Take a paper towel and LIGHTLY press it against the filter portion of the K&N breather. It should have light yellow oil on it.
Yellow is normal (filter comes with it to aid in grabbing gunk out of the air)
Black on the paper towel would be bad.

I'm not sure where the sulfur smell is coming from.
It could be just the old crap finally making it's way out the exhaust.


BTW- Jake's exhaust smells like roses.

i have that problem as well- everything is tight plus i rerouted the filter portion back into the sealed intake(VOLANT) to help get rid of the vapoer smell- but yet i still get the vapor smell- i only get a little bit of oil condensation out when i drain it and thats after about 1000 miles

do you have any probs with your Volant intake. i have a howlin/vibratin noise that you can feel through the pedals.
my black one had the K&N and no probs with it.

Like Kevan said it is probably clogged... Mine did not produce any fluids for about 4000 miles. I took it off and found it to be clogged. Once I cleaned it out real good I now Have to empty it (because it is 3/4 of the way full) about every 2 weeks. Nasty stuff in there!

I also get the "smell" in the cab.Being in sw florida I am using a/c most of the time.Thought maybe I installed something wrong.When idleing You can see the vapors coming from the little filter on top of the can so I guess it's working o.k.If I put the a/c on recirclelate I dont have any issues with vapor smell in the cab.Nice to hear I am not alone in this but what can we do about it??????
