(AP) In books such as "Slaughterhouse-Five," "Cat's Cradle," and "Hocus Pocus," Kurt Vonnegut mixed the bitter and funny with a touch of the profound.

Vonnegut, regarded by many critics as a key influence in shaping 20th-century American literature, died Wednesday at 84. He had suffered brain injuries after a recent fall at his Manhattan home, said his wife, photographer Jill Krementz.

In a statement, Norman Mailer hailed Vonnegut as "a marvelous writer with a style that remained undeniably and imperturbably his own. ... I would salute him _ our own Mark Twain."

"He was sort of like nobody else," said another fellow author, Gore Vidal. "Kurt was never dull."

Those of us who love to read will miss this man.

Oh Lordy,

A real talent....... a great writer....... uniquely insightful.........

The best of the modern day countercultural writers........ Never took himself too seriously......

Better than Wolfe, Kesey or even Kosinski........

R.I.P., K.V.

His dead was mentioned in our news today. Heard something about "Slaughterhouse-five" beeing about WWII.

Pitty, never read a work of him , shall do it.

WTF is this.....?

Has no one but us old guys ever heard of Kurt Vonnegut.....?

That drugged out, f*cked up trallop Anna Nicole is front page news when she dies of a frigging overdose... But when a true talent like KV dies at the ripe old age of 84 he's barely even recognized....??

WTF is the world coming to........?:( :dontknow:

It's like I said in an earlier thread. The newsmedia controls what you see, read and hear. Freedom of the press is a thing of the past.

My wife just told me that Kurt once said: (very loose quote) "The only proof that I need, that there is a God, is to listen to music."
