During the six hour drive to Boomers yesterday, I was hit by Laser speed detection 4 times. I generally drive within the speed limit so I was not stopped, but it is apparent that in Illinois, it is necessary to have laser jamming. The last I read, in European Car Magazine, no state has legislated againts laser jamming...

Would like to hear from those have laser jamming technology. How do the police react to your jamming? Do they get bent out of shape because you have avoided the speed trap?

Jamming anything in general is against federal law. Meaning, any electronic device in your possesion should receive and accept interference and cannot cause it.

Your best defense is knowing their procedures and equipment limitation.

For example, here in the state of VA, if a cop is using radar, the furtherst he can be from you is 125 FT. After that the signal scatter is too big and makes the reading useless in court. That's why they will use pacing instead of radar on most highways with dense traffic.

For laser it's 500 FT.

Not at home right now so I don't have the reference from the Mag. I will quote it when I return. The premise of the article was that to be protected today, you must have laser protection too. The article specifically listed two types of laser protection that were not illegal...seems they did not block...they made the laser guns inable to read a speed.

I think I will be back in Illinois on Thursday, I'll check then.

my 2 cents, since I operate(d) a military version:
Laser jamming will be difficult at best.
There still will be a 'burn-thru' range where at some minimum range the Cop with the laser gun will be able to 'see' thru your jamming, as with Radar Jamming.
You can minimize your frontal reflective area as with radar, but to eliminate it entirely would be impractical (front license plate, headlights, etc.).
There are products out there that emit a jamming signal (I believe 1.06 microns for most lasers) which may help. http://www.laserveil.com/cool_videos/
Then there is detection of the incoming signal, processing and returning a pulse at the speed of light - another issue.
So the best jammer would be transmitting at all times, which would inturn set off everybody's dectector - you would be a hit on the highway.

I'd love to hear and see anything effective for our trucks. Not saying you can't, just very difficult.

Whatever you do, don't buy a Rocky Mountain product - all hype.

If you want to see your most reflective parts of your truck, go out at night and take a FLASH picture of your truck from the front. The bright returns will be the most reflective, as radar/laser have very similar properties as light.

SR7 By passport. A neighbor of mine (motorcycle cop) used his laser gun on out road in front of our house. I think it was called a phaser3 or something, w/o it on coming from the front at 35 he picked me up at 1000+ feet. With it on I could get so close to him before he could get a speed that I would be a moron if I was still speeding. He tried 4 or 5 times aiming at different things on my truck and about 200 feet is where he could get me. He switched modes on the gun and then he couldn't get a reading at all... A difference from laser to normal ka/k/x band is that laser is the only radar than can get your speed while you’re traveling away from the gun. The sr7 has a rear laser jammer for that also, which performed better than the front. He said that they normal don't try to shoot for the back because there is less to aim for... I know there have been several times I have been hit with the gun while I was speeding heard the jammer noise slowed down turned them off and drove by the cop w/o any problem.
As far as the tech on how they work, in the manual it say it's like shinning a spot light at a flash light, until you get close the flash light will be dulled out by the spot light.
As far as Texas law, it only states it is against the law to jam "radar" and does not mention "lidar"(laser) anywhere...

Check into a K-40 Caliber system its has front and rear defusers, the front one is a detector & laser jammer, the rear is detector only, as far as how cop's react hahahah its funny to see there faces when you fly by, iam sure they know what it is but the system is hidden in the truck and contolled by a small remote, but the best part K-40 will pay any and all tickets you might get with system installed & working properly. It has saved me many times.

Do we have any active law enforcement people here? What would you think if your laser was not able to read a speed? Would you be pissed? Or would you just ignore it...?

Yes, and I eat donuts too, but still don't feel qualified to opine.

laser jammers give you a few seconds to slow down once the detector goes off. The cop will still be able to read your speed but you'll have to be closer than usual. They demonstrated a few types of jammers on tv and a lot of them didn't work at all. I wish I could remember the good one! I believe it was an electronic device that sends a beam back to the cop. they ahad other devices that just emit infared light out the front that really didn't work. they also tested various films that you apply to the front of the car. none of them worked at all.

I slept at a Holiday Inn Express once. :D ;) So, here it goes....

IMO Getting a Laser Jamming device is a bad idea, Roy... IF you do get pulled over, they will throw the book at you. Even go so far as to call every agency available (State Trooper, Sheriff, DOT) and go over your truck with a fine tooth comb. They look hard enough, and they WILL find something to ticket you with.

I just don't see that as being worth it... You drive the speed limit most of the time (as I do).... I think my time dealing with an angry cop on the side of the road (could be up to 4-5hours) is worth more money to me than a speeding ticket. :dontknow:

i run a jammer, it is TOTALLY ILLEGAL in any commercial vehicle, and any personal vehicle from what I hear.

Mine is very well hidden:D but also have a dummy detector just in case.

But a jammer is just a tad better if any than a detector, you get a small amount of protection, but within 100-150 yards its useless.

According to RadarBusters.com:

There are no federal prohibitions of laser jammers, as laser is controlled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under CFR 21, subpart 1040, 1041 for eye safety.

However states have enacted laws banning the ownership, sale and use of laser jammers they are Minnesota, California, Utah, Colorado, Illinois, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Virginia, and Washington DC.

Roy--I bought the Passport SR 7 with laser shifter 2 weeks ago.The unit comes with both forward and rear laser shifters. In the default mode the laser shifter is turned off. You have the ability to activate it with the touch of a button or put in the active mode on a constant basis.I have a button mounted on the dash that permits me to turn the laser shifter off-- once I have had a chance to slow down--so that the cop looking at me will only see a short malfunction in his laser gun and not constant jamming.

Leslie, that is exactly the info I was looking for. In all cases yesterday, I was targeted from a long way off. So I would have been able if necessary to slow down to a speed that would not offend the officer, then switch it off to avoid creating an advisarial situation! That is what I wanted to know.

Now about those other cars that are detecting my transmissions...I will have to get a reading from someone on that...

The K-40 has voice & tone mode, in voice mode it will tell you what you are being hit with exp= x-band, k-band, laser, front or rear etc, etc, and why would you care what the cop will think most probally wont even know what is going on. Because if they have there unit on the K-40 will pick it miles before you or him see each other even in mountains, winding roads whatever. Now if they are just running down the road and they see you before you see them they might just pull the trigger on you & when they use laser it has always blocked it for me, i did get caught on k-band once around a corner but again K-40 paid for it.
