Random question... I was talking with a buddy of mine about which years of Vipers are more desirable. There is one question in particular that I have no clue on. I know everyone says the 96-99 are forged but do the 2000-2002 engines have the same shitty pistons as the Gen3? I know the engines went from 488ci to 505ci but I'm not sure if it's the same bore with a longer stroke, vise-versa, or both changed. I guess even if the pistons weren't the same size, I guess my real question is do the 2000-2002 have the crappy cast pistons set-up with the top ring seat extremely close to the top of the piston or are they a little more boost friendly?

Both a hair bigger bore and stroke. Yes 2000+ have Eutectic pistons (not Hyperutectic which are stronger) and thing top ring land :(
They're all boost friendly with a good tune, but yes forged will take more detonation from a bad tune or fuel shortage under boost.

Wouldn't a eutectic piston be a little more forgiving under boost because they are not as brittle as a hypereutectic piston? Not trying to start a fight, I just really don't know.

Honestlly could be. Regardless they are both weaker than forged and the thin top land is thickened with forged.

Makes sense, especially about the ring land. Thanks.

I just know when GM started using Hyperutectic folks were hurting pistons often. Seems like as frequent as our engine based on production amount and people boosting/spraying them. Again, keep either piston from seeing detonation is key to longevity. Iow a great tune and supporting mods. :D

Ok, so 1. What's the difference between Hypereutectic and Eutectic?
2. The 00-02 Gen2 have the ring land extremely close to the top just like the Gen3?

Time to drop a Blown, injected big block in it and call it a day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as I know the difference is a Hyperutectic can run tightened cylinder tolerances without as much thermal expansion. It's based on silicone type in the aluminum alloy.
Yessir Gen 2 00-02 have pistons very similar to ours. Terrible for big power but reliable in a DD for hundreds of thousands of miles.

If your looking to get gen2 96-99 is the better motor. Downside is no abs brakes
If you can live without having abs and maybe just upgrade later to a bigger brake system you can easily make 800-900whp all day and very reliable a lot of guys are twin turbo making close to the 1000hp range on the stock forge internals.

2002-2002 not forge piston more like the gen3's but do have abs brakes

96-97 blue white GTS are the most desirable

"eutectic" simply means it's injected with silicon. Hypoeutectic means less than fully saturated, eutectic means it's fully saturated, and hypereutectic means it's over saturated. The over saturation leaves a hard, durable, heat resistant, and easily lubricated surface embedded on the piston. But, the extra hard surface also makes them slightly more brittle than a eutectic piston. Don't over think this. The only time you will ever see a eutectic piston is in OEM applications. As far as I know, their aren't enough good things about them for the aftermarket to offer them (cast is cheaper, hypereutectic is superior for barely anymore cost).

I have a 2001 rt ,if your plans are mild mods 2001-02 are the best to live with.
