So after selling one house buying another and moving this weekend my truck thinks its a work truck. I didnt move anything heavy just odds and ends but the wing had to come off. The wife commented on how much she prefers the wingless look. My reply was the wing goes back on unless I get a cover. Well it worked Im ordering a Lazerlite tomorrow and should have it in 12 or so days. I plan taking Curly Bills advice, Ide take the deal n crawfish then drill that ole devil in the ass. Ill be wingless for a few then will be drilling some hole in the cover. Lets just hope the truck doesnt blow up while the wing is off.

I think you'll like the Lazerlite cover. I dig mine, and I get to keep the wing on.

Removal is definitely a 2-person job, but it's quick and easy with two people. Putting it back on is just as simple. They did a good job with the design.

The only downside is the latching system. I've talked with Scott (owner of Lazerlite) about this. They have a couple of different latch types, both which work great, but aren't really what I desire. I've been working on my own designs. We'll see how it turns out.

To compliment your new cover- and give you a secure storage area- get a locking tailgate handle. Takes about 10 minutes to put in. Peace of mine lasts much longer. :)

This is mine...I dont have the locking tailgate yet, like Kevan mentioned. Wish I did, but it is hard to open!

Krazy- when you get the locking tailgate latch, do this:

- Loosen the nuts on the strikes on each side of the bed (the L-shaped pieces the rods go under when you lock it).
- Slide a piece of plywood/plexiglas/"something about 1/8" thick" between the top of the tailgate (or the back end of the bed rails) and the underside of the cover.
- Lower the cover and re-tighten the nuts on the strike so it's nice and tight.
- Raise your cover and remove the plywood/plexiglas/"something about 1/8" thick".

This gives your cover a little room to 'raise up' and slip past the weather stripping when you open the tailgate.
To close, just push up on the wing a little bit and the tailgate should slip past the weather stripping on the cover.
Lock your tailgate and lock your cover.
Done.

Thanx Kevan!

Do you have a problem with the weather stripping on the back end becoming excessively compressed? I had to put Silicone on the bolts to keep from chaffing but I noticed that the Lid is bent where my wing has pushed down on it....???...

If you email Scott, he'll send you new weather stripping for the cover. I think it's covered under their warranty (check with Scott). EASY to put on too.

The bolts for my wing were trimmed. I was nervous about them *maybe* matching up with the holes in the bed when I lowered the cover, so I installed the wing, marked them off, then trimmed them.
The weather stripping on mine isn't compressed enough for the bolts/nuts to touch the bed.

I'm not sure how your lid got bent. Maybe too tight on the nuts when installing? Was Poundstone in charge of the wrench when you put it on?
:D

Nope, thank god!!!:)

When I had a body shop put the wing on ( Too Scared to do it myself!:( ) the guy told me that I should let him move it up a little on the cover to make it easier to open. BIG mistake....I dont think it looks as good as if it were where it should be and I think it warped the cover at High Speed.:D:D:D

I might just remove the cover and take the loss....I'm not sure yet. But if I keep it, I'm gonna have the cover repaired and repainted, sonce I have some apparent pitting and I plan on having the truck repainted anywayz...:)

Krazy, I am considering a Retrax or Pace Edwarsd retractable cover. I like the sleek look of yours . any better pics from top? How easy was it to install the wing on top of the cover? Any problems with water leaks? where was the best place to order one ?

Krazy our trucks will look identical after the wing install. Cal vues are next if I can fit in the new garage with mirrors that dont fold. I plan on some racing stripes as soon as I get some spare time. I got an email from Scott on the cover, I had asked about the lock placement. He mentioned that the lock was moved and isnt the same as the pics on his site. Vpr Hler Lazerlite has some good pics of a SRT with the cover and wind installed on their site. Going to get the order done today so I can get my "work" truck turned back into a car with a bed. Thanks for all the info Kevan, is this a standard bed lock kit that you are using?

Yes- mine is the standard lock kit. The key was sanded down so it would fit under the wing. :)
It's a slight pain in the ass, but I'm pretty good at it now.

The other latching system they have is pretty simple. It's just two slide-latches on each side of the cover. There's no lock with this version, but if your tailgate locks, no one can access the slide-latches.

I'll get some pics of both systems once the hail and brutl storms stop.

Hey, I resent that! Maybe I better start reading the new threads a little closer!!

LMAO
It was a muscle/strength reference...heh heh.

I had this vision of you with a huge breaker bar cranking down on the 6mm nuts used to hold the wing on. :)

I only did that once, who told you??

Ha!
I'd love to get a pic of you putting a tiny 4-40 screw into a cell phone, but in full WSM form....flexing, sweating, grimace-faced.
It'd be an awesome picture. :)

On topic:
lbstone is one of the few that can remove the Lazerlite cover by himself.

yeah man... lazerlite is the way to go! Get new mirrors and paint the handles too while your at it.... drill some holes in it and get that wing back where it belongs!

Son of a, My wife must be on to the board. Yesterday she asked me if I got my cover ordered and I replied yes. Her next question was you dont plan on putting that wing back on the truck once you get it do you. Shit it wasnt a bold face lie but I did say no its not going back on the truck. Now when I put it back on I can say its not on the truck its on the cover. I have told her that trucks withouth wings blow up or flip over.

HA! Good move, Sirhc!
You're right- you didn't lie. :)

Dupa- that cover looks slick on the red truck. The black trim around the cover edge completes the 'line' from front to back. Very cool.

Your going to love the cover. It is one of the best upgrades I did on my truck.

I will post some pics soon and no it doesnt leak, atleast not that I know of.

And I didnt put it on, I punked out and had someone else put it on.
Bout I wish I had done it, oh, and if you do get it and you put your wing on it, make sure to cover the bolts that you put your wing on with silicone. Keeps from damaging the bedrail....hard lesson learned and watch out for pitting, I have some spots on my lid that looks kinda nasty.:(
