Story:
We go to the club each morning about 5:30 to work out...there were two very small wild kittens (feral) that hung around trying to beg food. Christine would always try to pet them to no avail. One morning they were not around, and in a thoughtless moment I said: "parking lot cats, usually become grease spots..." Thus ensued a week long period of silence...
Christine's birthday came up and a vet friend recommended a cat...actually he said that two cats were no more trouble than one (smart marketing). He sent me to a foundation that captured feral cats, nutered and spayed them and then released them...and they had two cats...yup...they had trapped the two kittens from the club parking lot...
Hence the names Seren and Dipity...it took over a year for us to be able to handle them...

When I worked at Infiniti, one of our customer's had an African Serval. He would bring it to the dealer when he got his car(s) serviced. That "cat" was cool as hell!!!
The guy said he dropped about $5k just to purchase the "cat"!!!!
I think it is illegal to own a pure Serval, as they are considered an exotic animal. I considered a Savanah cat first (cross breed of a Serval and domestic cat) but decided against them after reading that they need a fair amount of special care/diet and kittens start around $1500. Bengals are a cross of the smaller Asian Leopard cat and a domestic cat. They are very active, outgoing, and vocal. Serya follows us around like a dog, and howls pitifully if she can't be near you. Breeders and earlier generations(more wild) cats can cost several thousand dollars, but fourth or fifth generation "pet" quality kittens can be had for around $500, and they only require normal cat care.
Kevan, more about the prairie dogs please...how are they as pets?

Frisky you will definately get. Note the cupcake wrappers on the floor in the background of the second pic. When no one is around to play with her, Serya amuses herself by opening all the cabinets and spreading around their contents; cupcake wrappers from the kitchen cabinets and q-tips from the bathroom are her current favorites. Anything left on a table is immediately knocked onto the floor, and they like water, so expect company in the shower.

We have a special diet for them that's in pellet form. It's very high in fiber.
They really like Romaine lettuce, and as you can see, fresh yellow corn (not fans of the mixed or white).
They also LOVE almonds, but only slivered...not whole. Pine nuts are favorites too.
We keep a small bowl of sunflower seeds in their cage (10' x 3' x 3', plexiglass, custom built by me)
Chamonix's claws are a little long in that picture. We trim them fairly regularly. In the wild, they're worn down naturally by all the digging they do. In the house, we don't allow digging. Trimming Max's claws is a 2-person job. He's a big, fast p-dog. LOL
Here's a trick for ya:
If you want to stop a rodent from moving forward, cover their eyes.
The one down-side to them as pets is that they do chew. They'll chew anything. Their front teeth grow throughout their lives, so they're constantly trying to keep them short. We give them plenty of wood and other chew toys, but drywall seems to taste REALLY good.
They're not real 'cuddly' pets. They're always busy- eating, chewing, building. Don't leave a sock near them; it'll be packed away in no time. They are pretty gentle, but can bite. Their teeth are razor sharp from their chewing, and they have some good force in those jaws from the workouts too. When you first meet a p-dog, it will open it's mouth very wide, looking very fierce and as if it's about to bite you. This is defensive, but they also are smelling you using their nose *and* their mouth.
Tip: When first meeting a p-dog (or rodent), DO NOT offer it your fingertip. They will bite it. Instead, offer them a knuckle. It's much harder for them to get a grip on the knuckle.
Also, if they do bite, push in toward their mouth. This goes against human instinct, but it will get them to release.
When we first got Max he was NOT into being touched, at all. I had to wear leather gloves to handle him. After about a year, he mellowed out. A little. He's okay around Rachel and I, but really doesn't like strangers. Don't take it offensively; he was at the pet store a little too long and we think that messed him up a little.
Chamonix will climb into your lap and start to dig/build. She'll climb under your shirt then bark. I can also get her to lay on her back and pet her tummy until she's almost asleep. I'll video tape that sometime. It's pretty cool.
Loki is a night owl. He's more into being petted when it's dark out.
They ALL like having their hind quarters petted!
They only roam in the house. We have a special section of the house setup that they can pseudo-destroy. Plexiglass is a great barrier. I built them special ramps at all windows so they could climb up and look outside. They love sitting in the sun watching nothing happen outside.
Chamonix and Maximillian are 7 years old; Loki is 6. P-dogs are one of the few animals that lives longer in captivity; usually about 8-10 years. In the wild, P-dogs don't usually last more than 5 years. They are the chicken mcnugget of the animal kingdom- everything eats them. They are what is called a Keystone Species. If you wipe them out, you can take several hundred other species with them because of starvation and other aspects.
They're fun pets and pretty low maintenance.
And yes- they do bark.

awesome pets d. dont get me wrong from my other post, please. i have 2 dogs myself. i posted them earlier in this thread. i love animals. we have 2 cockateels, 14 ducks, 36 chickens, 3 horses one of which is a prize stallion from chincatink (spelling) island in virginia, 5 beef holstiens, 42 cats, some exotic fish, a racoon who come by for dinner every night, about 20 deer who bed in our woods, a flock of 6 geese who stop by for about 2 weeks every spring and stay in out pond and god knows what else.
