LG Electronics

Thanks friends...it will be installed today...your opinions help a lot. I will give you an amateur review soon.

Installed the LG on Friday...actually cut a hole in the media cabinet and mounted a cantilever mount on the wall...the picture is fine...looks just like the Sony it replaced...just a touch bigger...the wife wanted to fill the cabinet and I guess we made her happy...here is the before (Sony) and after ( 55 inch LG):

Gold Star was the back-bone of the appliance world, low prices and good quality.
LG just bought Gold-Star
This company (LG) is going to be BIG!

Quick

LG is a incredible company... It's highly funded by the Korean Government. They are very efficient, and very strict with their employees. Think Toyota in the early 80's. ;) LG will be, and in many respects already are, a formidable player in the appliance and electronics industry.

Jake an interesting bit of data from the installer...he says that there is very little if any real difference between the high end models or manufacturers...

He said it is such a competitive market for large flat screens, that none of them can afford to skimp on the picture quality...

That's true... If I'm not mistaken, there are only 3 or 4 manufacturers of the components that go into these TVs. And most people have never heard of them. ;) .... It's much like the computer and peripheral market. They are all basically made by the same folks anymore. And the profit margin is INCREDIBLY low on these things.

Wow, great looking TV, the transition to the big screen is fun. The cabinet is awesome, plucks the strings of my woodworker's heart:)

Nice job on getting it in there.....great addition to your viewing room. Hope it's trouble and hassle free. Best wishes. Thanks for the pics.

I learned the difference in TVs by seeing them playing side by side....put an HD TV by itself and you just oohh and ahhh....put it in a line up of other HDs and you are "dawwwmm...cant believe the diff"....The LG you bought I dont know...back in Dec 08 when I spent weeks studying what HD TV to buy there were no LGs around here..

I will say one mistake you may have made....the Plasma TV is supposed to be just as clear as the LCD...but has one problem....it lasts as long but the picture quality slowly degrades over time....the LCD will look as good as new till it quits....at least this was what I learned before we bought the Samsoung LCD dec 08....

I'm not much of a TV guy...so I went to the Consumer Union ratings...the 55 inch LG was rated top...I too looked at it among a lot of 55 inch screens...it was equal to the others and there were some that did not measure up.

TV's in our home seem to last a couple of years and then Christine has another "design" issue and we buy another one...picture quality is not of much concern to her...she watches mainly old black and white movies...

Cruster mentioned the cabinet...it was a year long project to get that cabinet from a manufacturer in Indiana...and it arrived with a scrape so it took another 4 months to get it back with the scratch repaired.

We had to take the two vertical braces out of the top shelf to get the new screen mounted...they are fiber board with veneer. Does anyone use just wood anymore? For the price we paid for that custom made cabinet, I was a little surprised to see the veneer...

I wish!!!

Norbert, we have a cable channel that is called Turner Classic Movies...it has lots of 70 and 80 year old movies...Christine can watch those old movies non-stop...I have to leave the room...

Great looking set up Roy. Congrat's. Tell C. she's a gal after my own heart. I stop channel surfing the minute I find something (anything) in black and white. It's a guarantee, that even the worst black and white is better than most of what is on TV today. Tell her I did watch Gene Kelly in "American in Paris" over the Thanksgiving holiday. Probably one of the first "in color" movies.:) PS next time you snap a pic or two, you may want to tidy up a bit, It looked like Stinker's place for a minute there. :p :p :D :D

Only kidding, Big Guy. And by the way, you probably don't remember, my truck has pin as well.:) (That's two) PS covention will be in Chicago next year. I'll be back (God willing) to watch old time movies with Christine, and send you for take out.......
She and I can discuss the finer points of sewage treatment and chemical engineering..........(during the commercials, of course)

Thanks Billy, we are trying to make the place a little more attractive so the two of you will return soon!

That's a definite maybe. This year the show is in New Orleans and for the first time, in almost twenty years Missy Robin is traveling with her old man!! How about that? If I show her a good time, maybe she'll follow me to Chi town? Hey wait a minute.......... Christine and I still get to watch old time movies right?

Sure and Robin and I will hit the Des Plains trail (across the street) on bicycles! Or snowshoes...depending on the weather.
