So the wife and I are in the process of selling our house and buying a bigger one. We have a builder doing some leg work for us and are looking at existing homes. I have a list of things that I have been making over the last 5 years that I wanted in my new house. Over the weekend the wife found a house for sale that she really likes. I wasnt as sold on it as she was even after she took me for the tour and tried to sell me on everything. Today I sent her a list of demands to be completed before we move in and told her to make an offer. I know that if they arent done prior to move in I will be the one doing them.

1st demand:

Remove this wallpaper and repaint the rooms

2nd demand:

Repaint this pink room

3rd demand:

4th demand

Ill be the first to tell you that I dont wear the pants so it appears that she really wants this house.

It's a house....a whole friggin house....

Got to go along with Hotrod on this one. You should be able to get more that head out of... Oop's:eek: , I mean headers out of this bartering session.:D

LMAO!!! Get all you can get ordered BEFORE you sign the papers. Once you do she'll be wanting new furniture and all kinds of shit and she'll forget about "the deal" you made to buy it in the first place...trust me.

I wont say if youve seen one youve seen them all but I just did. My wife was 100% against me getting the truck last month so that was a hard sell. Before I bought it she said I know how you are you buy something and then have to fix it up. My response was this truck comes with everything. Well that was the pitch and now I have to thank you all for directing me to all the nice little things that make it go fast. She also said you are done for gifts this year, no Bday Valentines day anniversary christmas. Newlyweds, 10 years tomorrow and we know each other like the lines of A christmas story. My birthday was the 6th and I got a card and nothing else from her. She is trying to hold true and not give in. We shall see how this plays out, we are going to the house tonight to make sure both vehicles will fit in the garage. The person that owns it had someone install all that garage wall storage. Trust me when I say I agree with the get the crap before I sign, she tried to play that card before.

Thanks all,

Chris

try to get her to throw in a couple of sexual favors on top of the headers too, its what id do ....lol

 Been there, said that!

My wife doesn't let me forget it either! :2in1: Welcome to the club!!:D:D

Back in 2004 when I first got my truck, I drove it up to the barber shop so I could get a hair cut, as I parked my truck out front I noticed the guy in the chair was looking at me. When I walk inside the guy in the chair asks me "is that one of them Viper trucks"? To which I reply "why yes it is, I just got it". He got a real puzzled look on his face and said "your wife LET you get that"? To which I replied "NO, she didn't, that is why I got rid of her. You have to make choices in life"! He never said a word after that. Now I am not saying any of you should do that, I just thought it was a funny conversation.

Bill.

Seriously though, true you know your wife better than anyone, but GET EVERYTHING YOU CAN UP FRONT!!!!! Like someone else said she'll forget about all of it when it comes time to shop for furniture etc. We went from 2000 to almost 4000 sq feet a couple of years ago and my wife's eyes rolled back in her head like a shark in a feeding frenzy with all the extra space she got to fill. She got her house, I got my YF.

We are going from 1700 to 3500 or so. I looked at the house again tonight and my concern was that we couldnt fit both vehicles in the garage. The wife has a tahoe and it is generally in the garage all the time. My plans for building a new home were to get a bump out on the garage so that both could fit. This house that we are looking at is wide enough but has that center divider between the garage doors. I have heard that you can knock out the center brick since its not load bearing and there is a steel header installed. Anyone have any exp with garage door installs like this. Seems like the opening is 17 feet and I would imagine standard garage doors are 8 and 16. Pic for reference.

Standard widths are 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16 & 18. You can get a custom width but it will run you a bit more. What size are the existing doors. My doors are 9' wide and I have no problem getting the truck through it.

OK, I remember Love, Honor, Charish but remind me where it said she gets to make up all the rules. I use that on my wife when she starts into that crap.

The doors are about 8' each, I had to fold my mirrors in to get past the center portion. They installed those nice built in storage units that are attached to the walls. My wife cant drive worth shit and I know she will hit that center divider. Its a case of take it out now or have insurance pay for it and the vehicle later. I posted on this once before but the wife and I both work for the same employer. She started right out of college and I went to motorola for 3 years. That was a bad move and I ended up taking my severance and running when I could. She made 3 times what I did this year and my salary was 62k. Not to brag over that but you can see my reasoning. That and she is a very I get my way thanks to her mother did I mention I love my mother in law. I learned from my 98 year old great grandfather that you can get what you want and not have to kiss ole brown to do it. His moto was just like a duck flat footed and dont give a f@ck, if it rains f@ck it Ill walk. I told her tonight if the door issue cant be resolved we are done looking. She said she will be on the phone tomorrow to find out what can be done. I know she wants this house so Ill get mine.

3500 Sq ft house+ nice yard with mature tree(s)+ quiet neighboor hood-Small garage=No Deal

HOLD OUT FOR A HOUSE WITH A REAL GARAGE.

You're going to buy a newer construction home then once you move in, after you've done repainting and removing wall paper, which will include retexturing the walls cuz paper doesn't come off alone. You'll then get around to modifying the garage door.
But that'll have to wait because you need to mow the yard & trim the tree. & after your 19millionth time going to Home Hell or Loads(of cash) the gardening equipment will takeover the garage and you'll either 1. have to park the truck outside,Because(said in a high pitch hysterical voice)" I'll be damned if I'm going to park the Tahoe outside in the rain"
Or 2.deal with the garden rake falling off its Hook and marring the Bright shiny yellow paint on your hood. Which you'll be able to see quite plainly as you sit behind the wheel Every time you get in the truck, till finnaly you cant take it anymore and run the garden hose from the tailpipe into the cab.....

Apparently, I have no idea what this discussion is about.......

I do know this, though.....:

Headers are overrated....... They are mostly for eye candy and if you have a S/C they can actually create more heat than one should have......

I was gonna get headers, but Mike (Nowwhat) and Dan Cragin (DC) talked me out of it..... Those guys know their shit.... That's good nuff for me.....

After all, what do I know...? I'm old and I only make about 600 rwhp..... I'm a neophite.

Can you see the header over the door? Generally they use the minimal header size required to support the load, and if they have a center support it greatly reduces the header size.

I would be really surprised if they put a header in there that supports the full span.

I'm with you, Looking at the pic the roof has a double pitch to it. The main pitch coming down and the gable pitch (decorative) over the garage doors. I doubt the center post between the doors is just for looks. I think the front wall is load bearing.

Sirhc76, If that's the case then changing it to one big door can still be done but your costs probably doubled. The contractor will have to build a temporary supporting structure while he demo's the facade and installs a full length header. Then remove the temporary structure. All depends on how bad y'all want this house and how much you want to spend to get it the way you want it. A good contractor can tell you what it would cost to make the changes. Good luck.
