Guys out've curiousity what are the different types of dyno's whats the difference??? Which one should you get dyno'd on?? I've read one reads higher and one lower?? Why?? TIA

If you don't mind I'd like to put in a little plug for a nice local shop. Ask for the MustangDyno guru Mike Murillo. This shop put together a paxton kit on a SRT-10 for Tim Duncan of the San Antonio spurs earlier this year and ran real nice. I'd ask for Len if you need some Viper work.

My son and I own a dyno in Orem, Utah. Our company is called Munoa Performance. Before I left for Korea there was a standing offer of a free dyno session for any forum member that wanted to come to Orem. I can't hold my son to that but I'll be home in a little over a year and the offer will still stand then. We only work by appointment so if anyone in Utah wants to contact my son, send me an email. It may take a while if you try to PM me because I can't check the forum that often. I just happened to look in today and saw this post.
Some one asked about different dynos and why their results can vary so much. I researched this quite a bit before I bought mine. I have a Dynopak Dyno where the wheel hubs are actually directly connected to the dyno. This is the same dyno used by the Pettys and other NASCAR teams as well as ralley and open wheel teams across Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand (where the dyno is made). Not only is it much safer but it is dead on consistent.
Consistency is vital in comparing dyno sessions to measure power increases or loses, especially those done at different times and under different environmental conditions. Accurate comparison data requires the ability to recreate similar conditions, traction, etc. as the previous session(s). Results can be skewed simply by tightening or losening the hold down straps on a roller dyno. That can dramatically change tranction by preloading or unloading the tires. That's not to say that roller dynos are unreliable. They do an awesome job in the hands of a good, experienced operator.
Basically, if you dyno a stock vehicle on a hot day with low air pressure and then, after installing some new performance parts, re-dyno the vehicle on a cooler day with better air pressure, your results may show more than the actual power increase because of the environmental factors. These variables can affect your results and, yes, Dynojets are rumored to be a little forgiving and Mustang Dynos are thought to be a little stingey. FastJack has some experience that contradicts this notion where the results from the two were pretty close but I'll let him tell that story.
There is also a difference if you are using the dyno to tune a vehicle and just need copmarison data or you just want to win a peeing contest and have a big number to brag on. The Dynapak will give you real numbers. We had a kid come and run his "L" but was disappointed in the peak number so he was going to go run it on a Dynojet because he thought it would give him a higher peak rating so he could tell his friends. I never heard what his results were but he was a real poser. I'm not hating on "L" owners, this guy was an idiot that happened to drive an "L".
It's kind of fun to have the owners give us a prediction and then see what the actual results are. Some are disappointed and some are pleasantly surprised. This biggest surprise was a primered 240SX with different colored body parts from three or four different cars. The drivetrain was modded to the hilt. The owner said he'd be happy with just over 300hp at the wheels. If I remember right, his first pull made around 380. By the time he finished his tuning session he was making nearly 500hp at the wheels!
I attached a photo of my son's old STi on our dyno. I thought I had one of my truck on the dyno but I must have left it at home.
I have to run but I hope this helps.
