London for New Year - anyone ever been?

If you have, any suggestions of some good places to watch the fireworks, besides in the 400,000+ crowd next to the river? Majority of restaurants or clubs I'm finding are doing a package deal of 3-5 course dinner, champagne, etc and even if I just want to get a drink there, I have to purchase a full-price ticket so that's not happening. Any ideas for good viewpoints?
