Longterm review: NOS

Nowwhat said:
Hey D....just got home....missed this thread....

To nos or not to nos....that is the question...

1) it is a track only item....are you going to run at the track?

2) if you want another 100 rwhp....let's get you the sealed ram air, elbow, meth and a tune...figure 690 rwhp...

3) The juice hits hard....I use a controller that "ramps" the shot in....taking some of the stress of the driveline...that system costs as much as a paxton....:(

4) if you go nos....you need...slicks, calipers and gauges...it is a slippery slope....:D

5) now to answer your q....the motor can handle a 100 shot....as long as you NEVER have detonation (pinging)..
that means a wet shot...propane or a seperate fuel cell...

Mike,

It sounds to me (because I don't race) that I should simply leave my truck where it is...... At about 600 rwhp..... Safety errs on the side of caution...

My truck is lots of fun the way it is... Besides, traction is the key issue for these trucks in the arena of E/T's... More hp probably just makes it even more difficult ..... I'd like to leave this truck to my son if possible.... and that makes me particularly concerned about long term durability.

I thought of getting rid of my Split Second box in favor of the VEC 3, Meth etc., etc.. But it really sounds like a can of worms... I don't spend countless hours in the garage with the hood up, dialing in my tune..... That's a great pastime for gearheads... But I'm more of an enthusiast than a tech guy or wrench addict.... My truck's a toy....

I'm simply attempting to reconcile my truck's current technology against the latest stuff and at the same time, do what's neccesary to prevent the "Kablooey" factor.....

Thanks alot (to everyone) for the info and updates.

Tim

I was gonna see how long one would last with a stock motor, paxton, and nos. Unfortunately I lost the engine before the nos. Out of this very expensive learning experience I have come to this conclusion...

1. People say its all in the tune.... yeah until the VEC that holds the tune screws it up

2. Pushing too close to that edge causes things to go boom eventually... only as strong as the weakest link

3. Do I really want all the power in the world or a reliable engine that is more powerful? How much more powerful then becomes the question $$$$$.

That said the blown engine will be rebuilt better, stronger, more powerful. Then the tune on the Paxton will be a bit conservative for daily driving. Nitrous for track use and stronger tune for strip. New goal is reliability.

Will a stock motor survive? For a while with a good tune. The tune will keep you from burning the pistons up but what if something screws up just a little bit the way mine did? The rods will take it for awhile but how long is dependant on the shot. I WAS going to have a small (50-75) shot in the motor and the rest spraying the intercooler to keep intake temps lower and more consistent, again for track use.

Personally, stock motor do one or the other. If you want both set aside for that bitch to pop.

Is the bottle still considered a NO-NO when used in conjuction with forced induction...?
Is a 50 shot still too hot....
When a Paxton blower is what I've got..?

sounds like dr. seuss to me buddy, but i doubt he knows anything about nos

I'm still lost on the allusion to Dr Seuss.....

Do you say "Dr Seuss" in association with the telling of myths and fairy tales...?

Or maybe I just talk funny......... I've been told that many times.....

I used to be told that I spoke like a gutter-bum.......

Maybe I went too far back the other way....

this thread has alot of good info...love this site.

oh...and I just got the DR Seuss...the ryming of the paragraph
conjunction * induction
shot * hot *got

still weird though

Think there is any under-engineering. Knowing folks will throw a power adder on a stock engine. . . ?
Stock= 500HP
Capable= 800HP

That's +300HP, or about a 60% increase over stock.
I'd say it's engineered quite well, and ready for the majority of the hearty souls out there. Anyone balking at 800HP needs professional help.
Like anything, there will be psychos that can never have enough (*cough*NowWhat*cough*) and will continue to build and re-build until they find the limit.
I'm sure he'll post when he does. No pictures or video, but he'll post. :)

I would say 200 or under, wet preferably IMO. The word "safe" is thrown around alot in here, if you want safe, stay stock and use your warranty. Its pay to play and if you cant handle the consequences of replacing parts on your dime, then dont mod. Will these motors take 800WHP on a stock shortblock, sure, but they wont do it for 100,000 miles. "Its all in the tune" - while its true that this will keep from melting pistons, and helps prevent rod/bearing failures, the stock rods are not exactly killer stuff, and they have come through the side of blocks making 500WHP, much less 800. What it boils down to (given good/safe tunes) is luck basically.

Heres an example: I have alot of friends with SRT4's. Mine blew up at 20K miles, it had 150+ passes easily, plus tons of street runs. There was no signs at all of detonation, not on the bearings, pistons tops, etc. A rod went through the side of the block, and the car was making about 370WHP (on the 310HP tune went it broke). A buddies car has as many passes, makes 425+, and has 10K miles more than mine. Ive put a motor in a 270WHP SRT4 with 18,000 miles, and Ive seen them with over 400WHP for 70,000+ miles, some guys are even making 500+ on stock shortblocks (100%+ increase).

D, I agree with Scrambler, I would avoid using both unless you have intentions of building a motor.

Bone will be the big test...as soon as he gets back!

Boommmm!
LOL Any questions?! (2 bent stock piston rods w/diamond pistons)

That really BITES!!!! Damn!! Should have installed better rods with the pistons, ya think?

Easy afterthought Einstein. And what are your mods?

Over the years we are learning...Bone's experience has contributed lots to our knowledge, (and detracted much from his pocketbook!) and that is the way we learn.

Every blown engine that gets rebuilt contributes to knowledge.

There are builds that go astray but we all gain from the experience.

Eric is fighting a perplexing problem and we will all be better off when he finds the cause, George is experimenting with a intake charge cooler of very unique design...FstJack, Dom, Justin and even FatJack are all people that are pushing the envelop and helping all of us in the process.

We are very fortunate to have pioneers here are willing to put the money, time and brain power into building these trucks...Bone I for one, greatly appreciate your dedication to building a engine that we are all are following very closely.
