Still in my quest to find something that I would enjoy doing and would provide some much needed funds. It has to be something that would have a relatively quick start up and would require minimal cash outlay. I came up with an idea that sounds promising to me, but wanted to hear from as many people as possible to see what others really think about it, and if anyone would use it.

I am considering providing a lunch service to businesses in the area. What it would consist of is delivered lunch each weekday. The menu would be large enough that no item would be repeated within a single month. I'm talking real homestyle food here, meat loaf, lasagna, enchiladas, etc, etc.. There would be a single substitution item per week. I really want to discourage substitutions.

I would set up accounts either on a monthly or annual plan, with some savings on the annual plan.

One of the first places I thought about selling this would be the local car dealerships, as well as local office complexes.

So, first of all is this anything that you might be interested in if it were available in your area. Secondly, what would you be willing to pay for it.

Thanks in advance for any feedback or advice. And go ahead and throw out any questions you might have about this.
 
It's an interesting idea. I am sure you have done a lot of thinking of some of the obstacles to overcome. If the business gets going you may have some trouble with delivery times during lunch breaks and travel time between customers, and trying to keep the food hot for delivery. Definetly under 6 bucks a day though
 
You may want to think about local colleges as well. .............. To make extra money, my roommate and I would make heros and sell them in the dorm, late at night. We would buy the cold cuts and hero breads, make the sandwiches (usually ham and cheese) at his sister's house nearby and pack everything into a shopping cart. We would wander the dormitory floors one by one. We ALWAYS sold out.

I have some questions:

In the communities that you will be targeting, what is the average cost of a lunch. I think that will play a big part. If there is a Subway across the street and they can get the sandwitch for 5 bucks and your pice is 6-8, then some may be unwilling to jump to you as an option.

Will drinks be involved?

I know where I work (two buildings 4 floors each), we are surrounded by fast food joints and have a cafeteria on the first floor. Most the people I observe using the cafeteria, use it simply because of the convenience and not fighting the crowds at the local business's (so that may be a plus, even with a higher price)

I know at one of the clinic's a lady comes by and takes orders for tomale's and around lunchtimes comes back with the orders (really cool), however she just does the tomale.

Will it work, absolutely.

What would I pay, here where I'm at I spend between 3.50 to 5.00 bucks for a lunch (not including drink). So my feeling would be no more than 5.00, however, our cost of living is much cheaper here, so it's difficult to compare.

We have Honey Baked Ham as well as Jasons Deli that deliver to the school I work on Fridays!!Prices are around the 8$ mark,and well within the market of many individuals !!! Sounds promising,good luck !!! :rock:
 
People at my office and most people I know enjoy taking their lunch break away from the office so they can escape interruptions and the phone ringing even if just for an hour. I personally wouldn't commit myself to staying in the office everyday for lunch even if it saved me a couple of bucks. If you have any medium to large factories in your area they could be an exception to this.

We do a lot of training classes where we order food in from local caterers. It would be great if there was one that we could deal with that had a wide variety of options. People get tired of sandwiches, bbq, etc when they have to eat it for a whole week, or even us that work here and have lunch and learns periodically where we always get one of 4 different things.

If you're relatively computer savvy you could make up a real looking menu and go knock on doors to test your area and determine the market where you have the best shot. You should do this anyway before moving ahead.
 
good advice scrambler, start small around here we have taco riaas something like that. they are just burrito trucks that go around to contruction sites and whatever too sell their products. Full on catering is a lot of work from what I can tell. Im in resturaunt buisness and see how expensive epuipment and hired help can be. But you mentioned home style cooking so pick a catchy name and if the food is GOOD!, your customers will come back begging for more. My personal advice.... Be different and creative! 90% of food catering specialize in "home cooking" best of luck to ya
 
Jesus Bob, will you do me a huge favor and just fuk'n come to work with us man? LOL, Bob, I know you feel like it's probably not worth it, but I promise man, we have a helluva company with a very bright future and you could do some awesome stuff with us! Please just consider it brother man. ;)
