Loud noise

It sounds like a PS Pump issue. The only reason I know this is that my wife's car had the exact same issue about a month ago. Took it to the dealership and there was a service bulletin out there that told them to check the PS fluid level. Now this was on an '04 Grand Prix GTP, but the sound you describe sounds very similar. The bulletin stated that although the fluid level will be within specs, it should be topped off until visible. We haven't heard the noise since it was topped off.

You may just wanna check the level. Hopefully this will work for you as well. :dontknow:

Was your noise constant or only during turns? Did the noise go away when the engine was cold?
 
It was a constant noise and more noticable when the car was cold, but could be heard even after it was warm. At first, I just thought my wife was describing normal supercharger whine, but when she made me come out and listen to it, it was way to loud to be from the supercharger.

Mine does it when it's cold, but not right at first. I will drive a few miles before the sound starts. Then after the truck is warmed up, it will go away.
 
Still got the sound. Last time I drove the truck I put it in neutral when the sound started. The sound would increase/decrease with me revving the engine. Sounds seems to only happen between 170-195 for the water temp and 165-185 for oil temp. So I'm still trouble shooting.
 
I have now discovered that the sound starts at 170 water temp and stops at 200 water temp. The sound also doesnt start until 2500 RPM's and I do not have to be driving. Any idea of when the stock T-stat starts to open and when it is fully open?
 
I have narrowed down the sound to the front right of the engine bay. I can feel the most amount of vibes in the oil cooler lines. And I believe the sound is coming from the oil cooler. Now I just don't know why. The only thing I can come up with is when the oil is cold the oil cooler is closed. Then as the oil heats up the oil cooler slowly opens. It is at this point the sound starts. But the sound only starts at 2500 RPM's as that is when the PSI is enough to cause the sound. Then once the oil is fully warmed up if flows eaiser (lower psi) and the oil cooler is now fully opened. So that equals no more sound.

I was focused on the water temp when I should have been looking at the oil temp. What temp does the oil cooler open?
 
You've made certain its not a header gasket ;) Your probably on it - but that is what first popped in my head.

Or you asking me or telling me that I have ruled out a header gasket? Cause my limited troubleshooting skills are running out Tom.
 
Finally got the noise figured out. It was the oil cooler. Dealer is throwing one on today. I thought all along that is was the oil cooler. For those who aren't real familiar here is the sound clip.

It is not the oil cooler. I replaced mine and it didn't make a difference....Hopefully it's it for you. I am having exactly the same problems you are....

That worries me a little bit. I have been under the hood and have narrowed down the sound to that area. What else is on the right side that would only make noise above 2000 RPM when the oil is only between 140-175? I will keep you updated on mine Rick.
 
After sitting at the dealer for 3 days I found out the part is on back order. Should be in at the end of the month. I will post up once it is in and if it took care of the noise.

Tell them to look into the New Jersey warehouse, they should have 2. I got mine in 2 days....
 
After listening to both sound clips carefully many times, I think it is a demon and an exorcism is in order.......:D .....:idea: .....;) .....
 
I call it the 10 second ghost. It's trying to come out...:burnout: :D :D
 
I got a new oil cooler put on. The sound is still there but not as bad. Rick what type of oil filter do you use?
