More platform sharing expected for Mercedes, Chrysler

The next generation of Mercedes and Chrysler cars will share even more components than they do today, according to Edmunds. Citing supplier sources, the report indicates Mercedes will use the new ‘LY’ platform for the 2010 E-Class, 2012 R-Class, and 2012 CLS-Class. The LY platform is widely expected to underpin the Dodge Challenger and Chrysler Imperial, as well as the next-generation Chrysler 300C, Dodge Magnum and Dodge Charger. Another common platform will be used for the post-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commander and well as the next Mercedes ML-Class, suppliers say.

This is what they needed to do for a long time. Since the merger, there wasn't much sharing going on. Now Chrysler's doing great and Daimler is foundering. Bolstering up the cooporation will greatly help to stabalize both companies.

I just had to do a term paper on the Daimler-Chyrsler Corporation for my Business Finance class. I've been through both companies financial statements for the last few years. Chrysler is posting profits and gains while Daimler was reporting losses. Mostly from its Smart Car venture which was turning out to be a bust. Now that Zeitch is in control of the parent company, Daimler is starting to come around and turned a profit last quarter.

The Benz side of the house might not be making money, but as always the quality is there. If they really do start putting Chrysler designs on top of Benz craftsmanship, I really don't think there is a company that can give them a run for the money. There was a long drought of decent products out of Chrysler, and I think that still makes it a little tough for them to get the big bucks for some of their current products. I think the 300 is the best looking car on the road, if they can market the Benz/Chrylser relationship the right way they could start selling those cars for the high dollars they are getting for the Mercedes.

Part of the problem with Benz loosing money was the loss in sales due to poor quality over the last couple of years under Jürgen E. Schrempp. There are a number of articles out there that talk about it. Now that Dieter Zetsche is in control, things are looking better for them. Lets hope it continues. When both companies are making money, that's more for R&D and new modles and concepts.
