Well, a local car show was held today where after the show most of the cars go to the local airport to run their vehicles in some 1/8 mile racing. State patrol reports the speeds through radar. Nothing formal...but definately fun.

I figure if you want to be the best (or fastest) you gotta challenge the best. I ran this guy in his 575 horse 3400 pound GTO which has huge slicks in the rear and is an auto. Its one of those cars that has a monstrous rumble to it...mean!! I ran him 2 years ago in my Viper. He got me off the line but after that didnt gain any more. I asked him if we could run together against my truck. He said no problem.

The airport was recently repaved with a sandpapery type of black asphalt. Racers had to go through some water then warm their tires on their way to the starting line.

So we line up and I'm feeling pretty good...I may suprise him. I get a little too aggressive on my launch rpm (dont remember what it was) and spin. I go to second and it takes awhile (because all I can hear is his car next to me) to realize I'm still spinning the tires. Before I realize it we're approaching the 1/8 mile mark so I try and go into 3rd but couldnt get it to go.

Anyway, I had my rears around 24 pounds, fronts at 41, front shocks on "1" and rears on "4". Gas was around 1/4 tank. Mind you this isnt an NHRA prepped track but still its frustrating not getting the power to the ground. I either need a drag radial, some weight in the back or both for these kind of races. Density altitude was around 4500 feet or so, better air than a few weeks ago.

I've included a picture of the car against my viper from a few years ago to give you an idea of what it looked like. I'm hoping for the video to be done from my co-worker over the next day or two...when it is I'll post it.

Looks like a great time, thanks for sharing the pics... can't wait to see the vid. Might need some better meat on the car... PS2's are what the Viper gang run... I believe.

So did you surprise him??!!

I dont think so. We're both planning on showing up to another car show where we get to run a full 1/4 mile in July I think. Its another airport with a concrete runway. I may fill the tank with more gas to add some weight and try a few 50 or 75 pound sandbags in the rear of the bed to help with the weight transfer. I'll also try and leave a little less aggressively then hit the pedal.

Nice pics ;)

DR's anytime soon ? :dontknow:

I run out of gear in the 1/8 and have to shift to 4th...Must have been putting up a smoke show if you just shifted into third at the 1/8.

You could also try short shifting until you get some stickier shoes :D

Its innevitable that I'll be getting the 390 DR's, just a matter of how soon. I'll also be looking around for the best price on the Eagle wheels...anyone know where the lowest price on them (17x10's) is?

I'm hoping to hook up with Tim (ViperTruck2933) and a few others this fall for some drag racing. I need some sea level altitude times under my belt so I dont have to play with these conversions from a mile high. To get the best times I need the best tires (without changing brakes) so the DR's will be purchased somewhat soon.

Well, I never thought about the fact that around my small town you cant really enjoy it. Driving around at 20 mph is no fun. If I lived in a bigger city with a chapter of the Viper club I might have kept it.

Another reason...Barrett-Jackson. It really got to me that being 1 of 86 built total it could be worth something in the far future. I added some bolt on mods but would have liked more. Unfortunately I was afraid that some of those more serious mods would have been noticable if I were to sell it down the line...taking away from its "stock" looking state.

With my current SRT, I dont worry about its future value, its more practicle to drive around town, I dont worry so much if I were to drive it to Denver (3 hours) and so on. Plus, with the truck...nobody is gonna suspect it to potentially outrun them in the 1/4 and/or the road course. The truck is a sleeper, the Viper is well...a Viper. Everyone expects it to be fast, not the truck.

If I find and can afford another one, I would look for one completely stock and keep it that way. An ACR version would really tempt my tummy in the same color combo.

Heres the video of the race.

The car is a '68 or '69 Pontiac LeMans running race gas, slicks, and has around 550 hp. I was told he runs in the 86 mph range in the 1/8 and 12 seconds or so in the 1/4. I did get a small lift in the front end but the rear tires soon broke loose. You can hear me spin in 2nd gear and I couldnt get to third for some reason.

Anyway, heres the vid for what its worth:
