my head rest camera mount

I had mentioned something to Justin (JMB) a little over a month ago about coming up with a camera mount system for the truck. I was thinking about something that would be secured from both the driver and passenger side head rest posts, he had suggested using the passenger side only.

Well, I finally got around to making something that I think will work great. A friend did the welding. I'll clean it up a bit but here it is. It uses 3/8 inch steel...same as our head rest posts. We also added a notch on one side so it would be secure and not come out...just like the head rests themselves. Its nothing special but will do the job. I'm hoping to try it out next weekend and in mid July at some drag race events.

Also, if you need to adjust the camera (up or down) I found that moving the seat up or down takes )tilting it forward or backward) care of the problem. You could also adjust the viewing width by moving the seat forward and/or backward.

Looks like it should work out just fine! Very secure and hopefully not too much vibration in that area. Can't wait to see the results!

I may be able to add some foam in between the mount and the bottom of the camera to reduce the vibration. Not sure if the camera has destabilization to reduce the amount of potential vibration or not. I agree about the vibration...especially on my launches and shifts at the 1/4 mile tracks :burnout:

I may be able to add/secure some weight (low/dense) along the seat bottom to help stabilize the seat and reduce vibration. I dont think I'd need much...we'll see.

also, something as simple as a bungee cord can stop the vibration.

Hope you don't think I'm trying to rain on your parade. I congratulate you on trying to figure out a cool way to mount the camera. I bought one of these and suctioned it to the rear window. Holds a small video camera nicely. I hope yours works. Good to see someone using ther head.

I like the headrest setup. If you added a gimbal and a slot (or slots) for the gimbal to slide fore and aft on, that'd be slick. A kip-levered hinge would be a simple way to offer some tilting.

I built my own camera mount using an Irwin quick-clamp and the gimbal from an old webcam mini-tripod. I machined a U-shaped piece of 6061 to hold the gimbal on the quick-clamp. It's totally adjustable (front to back), and no scratching with the rubber pads. I can even mount it 90 deg.

The quick-clamp was mounted to the edge of the rear window.

Those little suction guys look cool. I'd have to put a safety leash on the camera though.
