Worst case schnerio, take it to a competent machine shop and have the pan threaded to a -6 or -8 (whichever size is slightly bigger than the current size) female ORB thread. Then get a ORB plug from a local hydraulic shop and thread it in.
If the thread in the oil pan is stripped go for the helicoil. It's a good and solid fix and from then on the oil plug wil run in the steel of the helicoil so problems are over for good.
I wouldn't drive around knowing that the drain plug isn't tightened to specs. When you lose the drain plug you might lose the egine....
