My Mom phoned yesterday to tell me that she would like to give me a 6 month old submissive female golden retriever pup for my birthday/christmas.

The problem is that my girlfriend has two dogs, a submissive 7 yr. male mutt and a dominate 4 yr. female Jack Russell terrier.

Colby, the Jack Russell has a history of not playing well with a third dog in the house.

Any ideas what problems I am looking at in the future?

as the golden gets older she will be able to handle herself. female's are normally more dominant than males. and goldens can hold there own with the best of them. i dont see it being a problem after the golden gets on up in age.

Thanks Eddie,

The puppy's mom is very well behaved, even with my Mom's dog snapping and growling at her when she met her.

If the males are less dominate, maybe I should wait for a male puppy. I would just prefer the size of a female.

It's not the dogs that are dominate or submissive..... It's the owners. If you are a calm/assertive "Pack Leader", the rest of the pack will be fine. :)

And yes, I watch The Dog Whisperer.... and YES, Ceasar's techniques work. ;)

yeah ceasar does rock. i like how he handles those little ankle eaters.

It's your responsibility to correct the Jack Russell when he exhibits aggressive behavior... You are the Alpha dog, not him...

Get Ceaser Milan's books on dog training....... he's really great....

I know all experts don't agree, but I find The Dog Whisperer's techniques to be immediately useful.....

Jack Russell's can be cocky and aggressive little shits.... And if you aren't taking on the role of pack leader, he will.....

Good luck....

Thank you all for your advise, I will be ordering Ceaser Milan's books right now. I need to work on her dog's to begin with the addition of my I will even have more to deal with.

Just what the others (except Stinker) have said. You take control. Don't let the Jack Russell run the roost. Make him understand that you are the boss and he is not to mess with anyone else. You don't have to beat him. It's more an aura you put off. I've been to many homes where the dogs were suppose to be bad mofo's and they always keep their respectful distance from me. You can make it work out. Good luck.

One of Ceaser's principle means of correction is very simple.....

He stands very tall, kinda sticks his chest out a bit and makes a crisp shushing (shhhhhh...!!) sound while pointing his finger at the dog... It realy gets their attention.... Once you have their attention, then you make the correction...

Try it...it works....

You'll be glad you did..... He has seminars too. :)

Well, Ceasar's books don't seem to be available in Canada so far... I will have to keep looking online and drop by some of the book stores near my girlfriend's place on Saturday.

The website seems to be pretty indepth and will start my education there until this weekend.

Thanks
