I picked up a Nikon D5100 a year ago. No previous photography experience. There are tons of guides online. The best advice I can give..... it's all about controlling light. Learn all you can about the manual settings of your camera. Once you do, you will never use auto again.
As you learned already.. morning and evening hours are the best. Night shots are cool as well.

I too own a Nikon d5100. Just picked up a sigma wide angle lens.

My favorite lens is a Tokina 11-16 F2.8. It is what most of my pics are taken with. I think that might be the same as the Sigma.
