I am working on a new center console insert for my truck. I am just getting into tooling leather and wanted to show a little of the progress so far. Hopefully the project will be done in a week or so, if everything goes well. This piece will replace the cloth insert on the inside of the console.

Looks very cool to me!! Post up when done :D

does anyone know how to remove the plastic ring from the cover? think i would have done more research before starting this project

Tooling leather huh? Can't wait to start my interior project. I'll be doing extensive tooling and 3D wet-molding all over the place. Tooling leather comes with the territory when making leather armor and such. But I've got performance to beef up, paint to decide on, and audio crap to fix. But eventually I'll get to redoing all the interior stuff.

You can remove the plastic by just poping it loose. Stick your fingers around the edge of the front and carefully pry it apart.

If you like leather tooling and such, check out the albums at www.GoblinNation.com and theres a couple things on www.GoblinKingForge.com too.

it's hard to tell from the pic but it looks like 4-6 oz (thin) tooling leather. In which case, just as an idea, you may wish to wet the piece slightly and put it over the cloth (Its actually foam) and clamp it in. This would give it a bevel (like whats there now)
Thats just me putting my finger in another's pie though, dont listen to me ; )

Azmal. thanks for the info...took less than 5 mins and i didnt even break none of the plastic tabs. Put the piece of leather in and placed the cover on to see what it would look like. I think it looks pretty good for a beginner working with leather. Will keep tooling and posting. Thanks again

it is a thin piece (not sure of the oz). i was going to not use the foam insert because it hits on the seperators in the console and leaves a line on the foam. Was hoping to avoid this by not using it. I do appreciate the help though.

About 2 years ago i bought a huge lot of tools from a buddy of mine. he had the press and 75 different stamps, and probably 100+ tooling tools, mallets, awls, belt cutters, punches and probably 10,000 pieces of snaps, rivots, etc etc. also 3 boxes of leather, 2 full hides, one huge rubbermaid box of patterns, 4 different letter/number sets, one huge container with leather beading items etc. you get the idea. Looked like a damn Tandy Leather store. Anyways i bought all of that for $250.00. i kept it for 1 1/2 years doing nothing with it. We decided to sell on ebay because we never used it and honestly didnt know how to use everything. sold it for $300.00. 2 weeks ago we decide to get into tooling leather and now i am kicking myself in the ass for selling it . i had no idea how much all of them tools cost individually.

Very Nice.....

Your going to have a one off........well maybe

I see a few requests in your future

That looks real nice!!

One of a kind!

Are you planning on coloring the leather??

yeah... leather tool cost adds up quick. What everyone should realize is that the background on that leather he's got tooled there, the textured surface is filled with countless hammer strokes with a little bitty stick with a small patch of texture. Good work.

i still have to finish tooling the letters and doing some touch up tooling on the viper head and then i will be dying it. Hope to have it done by next saturday @ Tampa

Are you going to dye it and if so what colors :D

I am going to try one with the new viper design as well. I made the old style because it will match the black emblem i bought for my truck. If it comes out decently enough and if someone wants one let me know. Keep in mind i have only been doing this for 2 weeks so i am a little slow and my lines are not perfect. The one i am working on i have about 3 hours or so, and i still have to do the lettering. If someone has a decent picture of the new style viper emblem that would be great, otherwise i can download one from the internet i'm sure. I will also try to find different color dyes and try them out on some scrap leather to see how it will look. I am assuming the standard black, red, yellow, blue, etc. Azmal might actually know more about the dyes. Thanks for all the compliments.
