Well Gary (BOOMER) was kind enough to inform me today that I managed to hole out the #3 piston  Guess all of the seeming electrical issues I had was actually this. So engine coming out, new pistons, cam, roller rockers, rods, valve work and then back in the truck. After watching some of the other major builds over the past couple years I have decided not to build a monster (Blake's experience mainly). Goal is 800rwhp on a fairly conservative tune for everyday and nitrous for a boost on the strip.

So when ya'll are at the GTG up there next weekend, say hello to my baby for me. Red 05 QC with a mostly installed NOS setup :banghead:

Joe

Sorry to hear that. Is Gary doing the same NOS setup he did on my truck? If so.....you'll be pleased. Sorry again for your loss

did you have forced induction on your truck that caused the issue on #3 or was it na ??

Current set up is x-metal paxton, no water meth, headers. Its never run on the nitrous.

Wazzup, not sure on the exact setup. Is going to be similar to yours.

I now understand the frustration of those who have been here. Truck has been down for I don't know how long and now I am looking at spending another hefty chunk of change while its down for I don't know how long. Only hope that I don't have engine rebuild issues like some.

Any of you other blown motor guys have any suggestions???

Joe

Damn, that sucks. The only thing I could recommend be sure whoever is doing the rebuild is on top of their game and knows what they are doing and has a familiarity in the Viper motor specifically. Perhaps Underground Racing could do the rebuild...they seem pretty close to you. I cant think of anyone else in your area that I would allow to touch my motor much less rebuild it. Not sure if Doug Levin (Doug Levin Motorsports in Florida) does rebuilds or not. He's done a bunch of Paxton setups on the Vipers, not sure about the trucks.

Make sure you save the piston that failed. we'll add it to our collection amongst those of us with blown motors.

jsut for info undergound stroker around $13,000 stock cid I thin $10,000 same motors they use on their 1700rwhp cars

i'm starting to get the impression that forced induction on stock internals is just a bad idea........ is the roe supercharger the last one that hasn't yet blown our motors ??:dontknow:

Sorry to hear this. Kind of ruins one's day.

Can you provide somemore information as to what happened? Did this happen when Gary was working on the truck, or was he investigating what was wrong and found this.

Who did your install/tune?

I know a lot of members are getting kind of leary of going the FI route because of the number of blown engines that have resulted.

Thanks Joe.

Way back when on the NFFF a question was asked of John Hennessey, and I was surprised that he answered it, but it does relate to the issue of the failures of #3 and sometimes #4.

John had similar failures early on with some of his builds. What he found was that there was an oiling issue with the # 3/4 rod journal and this led to excessive heat buildup in the rod and piston. He claimed that once he resolved this issue, the problem disappeared. John however did not share what he did to resolve the issue, which is understandable, as building engines/cars/trucks is where he makes his money and why share secrets.

There was also an issue with the motor mount close to the #3 cyl. Seems there is a torque issue at that point that might cause the cylinder to get out of round. (Speculation)

I believe that most of the Roe installs are very conservative installs...an approach that I feel will be successful with the Paxson too. There are limits, beyond which the odds become very daunting...I feel pretty safe at 620 rwhp and stock internals. But if it blows today, I think I would accept that as part of the elevated hp environment. Hot rods that are driven hard will blow. We hate it, but most of us understand that it is part of our hobby.

The distortion of the block at number 3 was one of the items that Hennessey said was hog wash.

That may be the very best reason to re-look at the issue.

JH is a certified asshole, don't get me wrong. However when he wants he can build some nice shit, and he does know what he is talking about.

Mine blew out #4 .I though this was a fluke.I believe mine was due to a loose injector clip. When I was investigating, I notice that the #4 injector clip would not let the injector lock in.I assume this may have been the reason for limited fuel under boost.I am not sure, but it sounds good.:D I have no one to blame but myself since i had all the injectors out when i changed the plug wires.

i have talked to Joe Donovan about this too. He said he has seen a lot of Gen III Vipers lose #5 and was surprised when I said alot of trucks lose #3. He said it looks to him like the piston rods are where the failures are. :dontknow:

yip, sallll in the tune,

but the stock rods and pistons, bad tuning, shitty intake design leads to boomity boomity boom!!

i think its the combination of the rods, piston, intake design, and a possible mistake during tune

sound like an elite club to be in, i believe ill pass...lol
