New Tool Box Suggestions

Tarheelguy- I hear ya. With my budget, I could get about 4 Snap-On sockets....and we're done. :)
Like I said before, I'll probably pass on the HarborFreight box. While it's the right price, I just get my disposable tools from them (pry bars, chip brushes, etc.). The quality level I need might be there someday, but it's not happening this week.

Eddie- does your pops want to get me one too? :D

While SS looks fantastic, I'll probably stick with boring ol' black.
Unless Eddie upgrades to the Ted Nugent Model from Snap-On and wants to sell me his. LOL
(come on, Ed...that one is ALL you!)

shocked me too, i had two roll around with top boxes from walmart when he brought me that back. ask stinker. for the money you wont find a better box. casters are greasable and the drawers are built. even loaded down they dont sag a bit. just as smooth as can be. the same box from snap on would be 4 to 5 grand or more. my brother bought one in brushed stainless but i think mine looks better. cept for the fingerprints..lol

I found a local Lowe's that had the 41" Kobalt SS set in stock and took a look at it today. I was VERY surprised. It's well-built, plenty of room, and has some great features. The casters are nicer than those on the Snap-On "house" carts. :) We tried to get the drawers to "auto close", but it wasn't working very well. Maybe it needs actual tool weight for that to function properly. The slides were very nice with very little play in them.
The price was $358 for the top and $538 for the bottom, for a total of $886.

I found a combination from a maker called EXCEL (anyone heard of them?) Here's a link to the one I was looking at: EXCEL 41" combination tool box.
While that particular site has it listed at $999, I found a new-in-box one on Ebay for $780, shipped to my door (in 2-4 weeks). A helluva deal.

With the Kobalt, I'm getting dangerously close to Craftsman range (+$1000).

PROS:
- The price is right on the EXCEL.
- The KOBALT is well built with a bunch of great features not found in other boxes (recessed handles, power strip built into the side, no lip on top shelf, single locking drawer on top box). A couple of those you can't even get with the 5-figure Snap-On or Mac cabinets!
- The EXCEL is finished with a black powder coat.
- The KOBALT is local (Lowe's) so any problems can be handled quickly and without major expense.
- The EXCEL latches are flush with the face of the boxes.
- The EXCEL has 21 drawers.

CONS:
- The KOBALT is about $100 more expensive.
- The KOBALT is bare stainless steel. Every fingerprint will show up. It will need more cleaning than Stinker's shorts.
- Unsure of the build-quality on the EXCEL.
- Any problems with the EXCEL and it has to be shipped back to Chicago. On my dime.
- The latches on the KOBALT protrude from the face of the boxes. Easy to catch clothing/cords on their edges.
- The KOBALT only has 20 drawers.

Any pros or semi-pros want to get in on this? :)

BTW- One thing that was brought up earlier in the thread that I think is good advice:
No single company makes ALL the best tools. As the one guy said in his post, most professional mechanics have tools from several different companies in their tool box. Some are great at certain types of tools, and not so good at others.
Maybe XYZ Company makes great air tools, but their sockets suck. ABC Company makes awesome sockets but their torque wrenches suck. YYY Company makes crappy air tools but their torque wrenches are awesome.
I believe that and pretty much stick to it.
Brand loyalty is important, but a distant second to preventing failure of something mechanical.

I knew you would like the Kobalts (judging from your taste for quality :) ).... I say spend the extra $100 on the Kobalt set, and be happy. The only major issue (for me) would be the stainless steel.... But, it is all the fkn rage these days. ;) At least, if it scratches, you can just hit it up with some steel-wool. :)

Oh, and when you go back... grab a impact gun, or something heavy, and throw it in a drawer. I bet the auto-close will work. ;)

:burnout:

I'm not sure if that's a compliment or a slam. LOL :D

I would have done that today, but....I wasn't into having security tase me just for checking out a tool box: The Kobalt box was actually behind the cashier area...the spot where you land *after* you've paid for your stuff. I couldn't exactly walk over to it with an arm full of tools. :)

They did have some pretty sweet TASK FORCE gear there.
:D :D :D

I found the Excel International website.... They are made in China. :dontknow: In business since 2003! :D

Thanks Jake.
They don't look *too* bad. I've seen way worse, esp. out of China.
My one question:
- Why are the drawer slides on the top cab black and the drawer slides on the bottom cab silver?
Hmmmmm.....

Speaking of drawer slides.... I DID notice there were two on the bigger drawers. That is actually really good for heavy loads. :)

I know that you aren't interested in snap-on...But if you think that snap-on is expensive in the us you should try to buy them in Sweden....:D :D

This is what i have at my shop/work...I just love the quality and feel of the tools....

Yeah, Stefan. I hear ya. I can't imagine the price of Snap-On's over there.
There's not a comparable company in Europe? I'm trying to remember where we got all our tools from when I was at Sachtler.

On the plus side, you guys have:
- Swedish Bikini Team
- Peter Forsberg
- Lene Alexander
:D
