Army won't buy IN-made Humvees starting in 2011

MISHAWAKA, IN - The Army says Humvees no longer suit its needs and it won't buy any new vehicles after this year.

Army spokesman Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings says a changing combat environment in Iraq and Afghanistan is shifting the military toward armored Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles. The Army has not included money for new Humvees in its 2011 budget.

Cummings said Wednesday that the Army will receive about 2,600 Humvees in March that it had already ordered using money from its 2010 budget. Those will be the last new Humvees it buys.

AM General spokeswoman Celeste Ross says more than half the vehicles the Mishawaka company makes are for the Army.

Congressional Rep. Joe Donnelly says he will fight for a change in the budget.

One of my counterparts at the trucking company I work for delivers all Military vehicles from AM General to the armor plating factory in Cincinnati, OH. He makes about $20MIL a year doing that..... I bet he's shitting his pants right about now.

The Chinese bought the rights to the CIVILIAN "Hummer" brand that was owned by GM.

the humvee is a bad design for fighting. soft top, no armored doors. i live close to where they retrofit the doors to be armored. watervliet. stupid to use them as long as they did. might as well have used jeeps......
