So over the last few days my truck has done this twice now. When I start her up, put it in drive and turn the wheel to pull out of a parking spot...the steering wheel turns but the wheels stay straight.

WTF!

After I put it in park and then in drive again, it works. I'm not a car mechanic but I looked at the steering and it seems to be in one piece. Is there any known issues with the steering?:dontknow:

Maybe? If not maybe the steering box. How many miles you got on that thing?

Just hit 10,000 yesterday.

The pump on mine went bad...

It was steering by Ibstone, but the wheels still moved

If it was the power steering pump the wheels would be hard to turn but still they would turn....I would have the truck wreckered to the dealer...something major wrong...and very dangerous..:(

Thats why you have a warranty............call Windward Dodge.

Ummm...lowering kit? I think my warranty is voided on that. But I'm gonna go see them. I get a dsicount for being part of the Dodge Ikonz truck club here.

The pumps are susceptible to failure. I had mine replaced under warranty. Don't know about the steering wheel turning but the wheels don't. You wouldn't want that to happen while driving down the freeway. There is a U-joint between the steering shaft and pump. Make sure the pinch bolts are tight and that everything is functioning properly.

If you're turning the steering wheel and the wheels are staying straight, there's a LINKAGE issue.
Start at the steering shaft at the firewall, and follow it all the way to the lug nuts (on both sides).
Triple-check that every component in the chain is clipped, bolted, and torqued correctly.

It's probably not your pump. Even with a failed PS pump, the wheels would still turn. It'd be a heavy workout, but they'd still react to the steering wheel moves.

What's weird is how it works after putting it in park and taking it back out. I really can't figure that out, so when you find out let us know, we're interested.

Does it happen only when the truck is cold or hot?
