I found a 86 z28 with a 350 in it , it has a 4 barrel carb sitting on top of it... I believe everything is stock. How much hp does these engines usually put out? and is the best engine to build to at least run low 11's. and it has the stock 10 bolt rear end. Do you know what gears they came with

Well, back in 86, a stock 350 in a camaro was worth about 225 HP (Close guess). I had a 89 IROC with a 350, which was FI and it was rated at 245HP. Torque was somewhere around 300.

As for gears all I recall is the mid 90s. They came stock with a 3.23 ( I would guess the 80s were the same).

Had an '84 Trans Am WS6 with the LB9 305 4 barrel. It was rated at 195 hp. Didn't think Chevy went with the 350 until it went into the TA GTA and then it was FI. I know I'm talking Pontiac but both F Body platforms shared the same powerplants.

he did say that the engine was a 87 and came out of another car.

would this be something that I could make into a low 11 car for cheap?

From what little research I've done. If it's carburetted, I think it's a 305. GM didn't use the 350 until '87 and it had the Tuned Port FI and it was only available on the IROC. Now if the seller took a TPFI block and stuck the 305 carb on it, who knows. :dontknow: . I think the IROC Z28 with the TP was still under 225 HP.

As far as making it an 11 second car? I guess it could be done with the right power adders. Probably not for cheap though. Good luck.

Here is some info on the F Body cars. Look down at the bottom of the page for engine and tranny/rear end info.

That's going to take 500 plus hp. It's not going to be cheap.

True, but given the car is probably 2K rather than 30K he has a BIG head start.

I would look for a car without the drive train. Then buy a professionaly built engine or crate engine and go from there. Of course you will have a lot of suspension work to do. I would also look for a Mustang, late 80s early 90s. They are small and light, makes a good drag car. Something like this.....

The other thing you have to consider, you build a 11 second car you need a roll cage.

i could be wrong but the GTA TA was a turbo V6.

It was available in '89 I think as an anniversary edition. It was white with blue accents. I think it had the same motor as the Buick Grand National. Need to check on that. All other GTA's had the 5.7 Tuned Port.

i thought only the GTA was the turbo V6, and yes it was the same as the BGN

Check this page out. It shows all the engine combinations available. Yes it does have the Turbo 3.8 Buick engine (250-300 hp depends on who you ask). The 20th Anniversay Turbo Trans Am was based on the GTA package. If you just got the GTA, it had the 5.7 TPI in it. There were only about 1500 of the TTA's built. Just checked eBay. They have a couple ranging from $11k on up.

Yes this is so. If I recall about 195 hp in '86 on the IROC is about right. I could be wrong though. I think my number is a slight under-shot.:dontknow:

its not the orignal engine.... The owner now says the owner before him put in a 350 .... I have been trying to look up a 6 point roll cage, any ideas on kits? I am going to order a IHRA rule book tommorrow, to see what class and the rules for the cars

Does he know what it came out of? If he can give you that info, you can get some idea of what the stock engine was rated at (HP). You can't tell if it's a 350 or 305 visually (that I know of). The 302, 305, 327, 350 all look the same from the outside. It's all internal dimensions.

Try Summit or Jegs for the roll cage or once you get the rulebook have one custom made from a local welding place. Just make sure the pipe diameter, gauge and type meet or exceed the safety rules or you'll be doing it all over.

The GTA is a V8. The TTA was a V6. The blocks are different for TTA and BGN. The water pump's attach differently, and they also have different size water jackets internally.

Making a 5.7L in THAT car run 11's shouldn't be to terribly hard. It all depends on what you're willing to sacrifice. If you strip the weight down and do attack the suspension properly 11's should be doable N/A. Big bore, big heads, big solid roller cam, lots of fuel! :)

I'd find a "cheap" LS1 and do heads/cam/intake/tune and have a nice reliable car thats fast. :)

As always, HAVE FUN! :)

ok guys here is another dumb question.....I am looking to put 2 4barrel carbs on top of that 350 , Or three single carbs.... were would I find that type of intake? I have looked all over the net but I guess I just dont know the correct name for stuff.

Here is one find. I searched under "Chevy 3 deuces"

And here's an eBay auction from the same people.
