It's also interesting to see how the tires are shaped at the top end. They are all distorted and when the pop the chute they go all funny again.

Actually they launch at an idle (for these guys idle is in the 2600 to 2900 RPM range) and almost instantantly attain the 8000 RPM. The acceleration is a result of the clutch (and other things like timing and such) locking up.

If you've never been to an NHRA event and seen top fuel\funny cars race in person, I highly recommend it. Words simply cannot convey the sound and sensation of these monsters running down the track in 4 sec at 300+.
