Hey guys, need any and all advice you care to give about living in Brooklyn. Most likely, I will be moving to Brooklyn with 2 friends of mine sometime in July/August and need some info about where to live and NOT to live. I am starting my 3rd year med school rotations and am putting in for Maimonides, Methodist, Lutheran and Long Island medical centers.
Besides being close to these hospitals, I would also like to be in an area that has other young professionals (mid 20's to mid 40's - don't be offended if you're over 40 :D ) with some nightlife and cool shops etc etc. So far I've heard Park Slope and Williamsburg are good. I've already been checking rent prices in these areas so I know what I'm in for when it comes to that. What else would be good to know? Any advice are appreciated, thanks.

I'll do some investigating and let you know. I have a few friends that live in brooklyn. I actually grew up ther euntil I was 5 and lived in sheepshead bay.

There are lots of good neighborhoods. Bay Ridge ( remember Welcome Back Kotter?) Sheepshead bay, Marine Park, Mill Basin. If you can afford it Brooklyn Hieghts would be my choice:D

Thanks Treker. Also, whats the parking like? Is it worth getting a car or just do public transportation?
PARKING SUCKS. You can leave your Nightrunner at my house for free!

park slope or carol gardens would be okay, also williamsburg is alright, but manhattan would be better.
no nightlife in sheepshead. maybe look into battery park city, downtown manhattan.

Sweet! Now you'd only start it and not drive it right? :dontknow: :D
I wish I could bring it but don't want to take any chances and since parking sucks.

I agree with most of what's been said here. I lived in Park Slope for a few years. Very nice neighboorhoods, safe, hip, fun, active at night. If you can get a place close to the hospital, its pretty quiet, they don't let ambulances or fire trucks, etc use their sirens for a couple blocks...

Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill, and Fort Greene are in the same vicinity and good if you tolerate a bit rougher NY. Less nightlife. Williamsburg is wannabe hipster central. Overpriced loft conversions and trust fund kids. All the cool people left or got priced out years ago.

Parking in Brooklyn sucks. Alternate side parking. Google it. Basically means you can't park on the left side of the street for 3 hours during the day on one day and then on the right the next day. And parking a truck is huge pain due to the length. You pass a dozen spaces you can't fit before you find one you can. If you keep a car in Brooklyn, pay for a garage space, its worth it.

That's my 2 cents.

Feel free to ask about specifics too, if you find a place that looks attractive over the internet, etc.

Oh, yeah, and I'd live in Brooklyn Heights too, if I could afford it. http://www.vtcoa.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
