Oil Pressure Question

3 times in the last 3 weeks, my oil pressure gauge has dropped pressure low enough to make the idiot light come on. All 3 times the pressure has dropped for about 5 seconds and then shot back up. Does anyone know if this is this a problem with the guage or is this a sign that maybe the oil pump is starting to fail? Am i the only one with this problem?
 
I would check the sending unit (itself and the connection). I have heard of a few going bad...but this is something you want to make sure of asap; last thing you need is no oil pressure!
 
Mutt --get a seperate mechanical oil pressure gauge and and plug it in where the sending unit goes ---check the pressure ---you surely don't want to take any chances with this.....Remember I've seen you drive ;)

When my sending unit went the pressure maxed out...stayed there when the engine was on until it was turned off...very easy to replace...seems like it was about 30 or 40 dollars.

Less scary than a sending unit that drops off...for sure.
 
Check the oil fluid on your dipstick. It has happened to me before because of no oil. Just in case, check it and if it still have the oil then check the sending unit.

How bout take it back to the dealer if h has warranty and stop being the mechanic yourself
 
What makes the light come on? Does the gauge and light get its info from the same unit?
 
I would have this checked out as soon as possible... most likely a SU, but could be your pump or the pick-up.

I am allways very mindful of what my gauges are doing, and I am allways listening to the motor if it makes any weird sounds, etc..

this seems to be the problem...low oil...time for an oil change anyways...thanks for all of the help:rock: (thank god it was a simple solution)

Low oil... where did it all go? I know they motors burn a little, and typically on mine every 3k drain about 9qts, and put in 10... but I have never shown low on the dipstick... :nurse:

i just did my brakes 2 weeks ago with the help of dennis, and he pointed out a couple small leaks-valve covers and the pan...will go through and fix all when i do the oil change
 
How low on oil was your truck? Was it still on the stick? Are these sensors that sensitve that if you were a quart or so low it would do that? Mine does't seem to use very little oil,about 1/2 a quart per 3000/M
 
it was just barely reading on the stick...i added a quart and took it for a spin, no light or buzzer yet...
 
A quart low, then you hit the brakes would be enough to lose most if not all oil pressure for a short time (5-6sec). Thats not good for your motor...
