Question for those who have some technical experience with this engine.

My oil pressure seems very high. At cold start up it is at almost 100 lbs. When the engine is warm and the oil temperature is up, at idle the pressure is about 75 lbs. At speed on the high way the pressure is at about 95.

While low oil pressure would raise a red flag in my mind immediately, this consistent high oil pressure is causing me some consternation. Especially after 1fast400 had two oil pump failures.

The other thing that worries me is the tendency for our trucks to develop oil leaks in a few specific places...I do currently have a very slight seep in a connector going to the oil cooler.

Any ideas?

Prof,

What oil filter are you running?

Oil coller line is a common thing. Are you still under warranty? J/K

Wheres Bam Bam when we need him??

My oil pressure runs at 75 on cold start up, at temp it runs at 50. I think you have a guage problem or some blockage somewhere?? :dontknow:

In my experience the pressure sending units are notoriously 'all over the place'. Every service manual I've seen (haven't looked at ours) the manufacture specifies an external pressure gauge is attached in lieu of the pressure sending unit to verify proper reading.

Mine can run anywhere from 75-100 at startup and 25-60 once warm. I had similar weeping on my oil cooler lines. Replaced under warranty but if they leak again I'll look at aftermarket for a more permanent fix.

Love the sound of both of those responses...

Marc, got the filter from the Dodge Dealer.

I think the warranty runs out this month some time...I have been waiting to see if someone comes up with steel braid lines rather than deal with the seep...doesn't get to the ground...just leaves a slight film on the fender well.

Other ideas....maybe I can add an additional oil pressure gauge in the engine compartment...anyone have a recommendation on what one to get and where to hook it up? Pics?

if you do that i would go with a manual one under the hood. would have to do some looking as to where to hook it up, mine ranges from 75 cold at idle to 25 hot at idle also it stays at 50 to 65 at rpms

mine runs at 75 at idle warm. i always wondered why this is also :dontknow:

Ok....oil pressure gauge suggestions on brand and location?

i would say stewart warner would be my choice as far as location that would be a good question without looking i couldnt tell ya, stinker has some mounted on plastic cowl in front of front windshield in carbon fiber housings that look too cool. maybe we can get him to chime in.

Prof, there must be a TSB on the oil lines. I told them I belonged to this website and many members had complained about these lines leaking. The dealer ordered the parts and installed them under warranty. No questions asked. For what it's worth, the mechanic said it's a lousy design, something about the material of construction and our blocks. Hope this helps a bit.

Replace you sending unit prof

but on a note, how well or what kind of breather system do you have?

on forced induction that is the cause of many oil leaks, you need a breather from each valve cover, and no I really dont care what any of the builders have to say, jsut take my word on this , it makes a big difference.

And also that is the reason why I run a mechanical oil pressure, water temp, and fuel pressure guage, you need accurate readings and stock guages cannot be trusted.

As far as location on the new oil pressure gauge I would get a dual pod a pillar gauge. I think you could find one without too much problem and not have a gauge just by itself. It would be located in the same spot as the oil temp above or below it your choice.

Thats close to where my sits at... 30 hot at idle.. and 50-65 at rpms.

IMO Autometer makes the best gauges. They are pretty much the after market industry standard. The add-on gauges through Mopar Performance are also Autometer Ultra-lite series. I would get a mechanical oil pressure gauge and mount it in a dual pillar pod as previously suggested. Autometer also makes pillar pods for Rams. Check THIS out.

Thats what I get 75/25/50

It's good to see others getting the samething

I never remembered seeing it till after the work to get new paint on the truck.....

9 weeks and I completely forgot

Ah shit Roy, just step up and install some gauges...I went with Autometer Ultra Lite II because the lighting is better for us old farts. All three gauge pods are Autometer items as well...;) :p

Hey Steve....

When do you get the opportunity to watch the road

Thanks folks. Everyone seems to think that it is a gauge problem...I hope that is it. I am getting several pillar gauges added by Gary on my next trip to Evansville, I will add a new mechanical oil pressure gauge to the list. It also looks like Autometer it the company of choice.

Thanks friends...

At least it wasn't a blood pressure problem - glad you got it figgered out there Roy :D

My life is so laid-back that blood pressure is in the negative numbers!

But I still have one consulting client and that hits me for about 5 hours a month and one trip a quarter...and yesterday...got a call about teaching a couple of classes in the fall...very tempting to get back in the classroom...I do love that environment.

I still wonder what might cause high oil pressure and what would be considered too high??
