I'm sure most will say WTF are you talking about...but I might as well ask.

Since I was a child I get (what is called) a Canker Sores. I have searched for years and years on cures, with no luck....even after talking with some. I have tried everything from herbal medications, to special diets, and anything else you can think of! Yes, I have heard all the jokes you can throw at someone who gets them...:p

I'm attacking it tonight with pure 100% salt!!

To my surprise, there are even videos of others (you tube) that deal with the same issue!! :D I don't feel left out anymore

Anyone else get them from food, stress, bite your cheek, etc???

Have some cool family trick you can share?!?

Welcome to CSA Canker Sore Anonymous :(

isnt that a form of herpes?

seriously though, take daily vitamins and work out more. i think its due to stress/ulsars. also heard of mona'vie works wonders

Are you talking about fever blisters on the lips or sores inside of the mouth?

I can't tell you why I get them, but I too have the same problem periodically !!! But we have had in my family,an ancient canister (about the size of a can of Spam)a powdery substance called Amonium Alum !! When the sore breaks out,I grind the powder up (because of sitting there),wet a Q Tip and put some of this powdery substance on the sore !!Let me tell you, this shitt has got to be the most sourest, bitterest tasting chitt I have ever injested, but within a few days, that Summbeech is gone !!!I'm sure someone would tell me I need to discard this item because of its age,but ain't no way,the chitt works !!!

It is a herpes simplex. Herpes simplex 1 occurs above the waist, simplex 2 below the waist. It is a viral infection that is aroused by poor health and sometimes stress.

There is no cure.

It is contagious, so avoid contact with others or other parts of your body.

There are some medications that can be prescribed by your physician...that lessen the symptoms...but again, there is no cure...80 million Americans suffer from them.

bingo! grandmas best medicine;)

I used to make some seriously hot azz salsa and get them(at least a mouth sore???). use some peroxide on them, mine were never contagious, not STD related, or stress related.

Canker sores CAN be caused by Herpes Simplex, but they aren't the same thing as Herpes Simplex per se'.

There are over the counter drugs such as Abbreva ... as well as topical anesthetics like Oragel...... I've used it an it works well... Also Anbesol and Zylactin.... All these will provide temporary relief...

One way to promote the healing of canker sores is to swish hydrogen peroxide around in your mouth... DON'T SWALLOW IT.... and RINSE VIGOROUSLY until the taste is completely gone from your mouth.

Also DO NOT eat or drink anything acidic, such as citrus juice products, tomatoes etc....

You should'a called me, Patrick.....and yes, powdered Alum is an old time remedy...so is silver nitrate...both burn like fire, but they work.

And don't eat any potato chips either......

I used to get them but haven't since I was a kid. I'm thankful for that, cause they hurt like hell. Good luck Patrick, all I can recommend from way back then is Anbesol.

Oh yeah,I forgot to mention it burns like a Bon ofa Sitch, but no pain,no gain !!!:D

When I notice one developing I soak my tooth brush in Listerine to kill any germs and swish with it as well. It really helps me. Good luck!

Go to the drug store and get you a bottle of L-Lysine (1000mg tablets). You can find it in the Dietary Supplement section.... Take one tablet, then 3 hours later take another one. You cold sore should be gone within a day or two. :)

Take Abbreva for temporary relief, in the mean time.... Stay away from anything acidic, like Tim says.

Sarah gets these a couple times a year...... This works, and it won't hurt ya. ;)

Wow...Guess Im not alone on this one ....

Did the 'pack salt in it' deal.. OH MY...that was a rush LOL. Never tried the alum, Ill give that a try!

Its inside - Canker Sore (cold sores are on the outside....I never get those)

Yep Alum is what grandma always had on hand, kinda like rock salt(never ground it up though) just stuck a piece on the sore........Ouch, and it will make you pucker right up.:D :D :D :nurse: :nurse:

Hydrogene Peroxide.
Don't swallow it, just take a swig and swish it around your month and let it bubble up, (if it bubbling, it killing an infection.) Do that for a few minutes and spit it out and rinse your mouth out with fresh water.

It will also make your teeth brighter.

I brush my teeth and do that a least once or more a week. I used it for everything from mouth sores, skin fungus, to through-and-through gun shot wounds. :ridinghorse:

Good stuff.

No really no bull

Canker sores may be small, but they cause big, painful problems. Knowing the causes may help to develop a canker sore prevention strategy. Technically, canker sores are called aphthous ulcers. They appear as shallow, painful sores on the inside of the lips, the inside of the cheeks, or on the gums. They begin as small, reddish swellings. Then they burst, and the ruptured sores are covered with a white or yellow membrane. Untreated, a canker sore can last up to three weeks.

According to Dr. Ethan Schuman, a St. Louis dentist whose specializes in advanced dental technologies, "There is no one thing that causes a canker sore. But there are events or chemicals that are likely to cause them and if the patient can associate the outbreak with the trigger, then he/she may possibly avoid getting the sores."

Dr. Schuman suggests that watching for key triggers such as toothpaste type, mouth injuries, and nutritional deficiencies can make the difference.

Here's what to look for.

Toothpastes and mouthwashes that contain SLS:
Toothpastes with sodium lauryl sulfate ("SLS"), a foaming agent in toothpastes and mouthwashes, may increase the recurrence rate of canker sores. SLS dries oral tissues, making them vulnerable to irritants.

Several studies show that participants who brush with SLS-free toothpaste reduce the frequency of canker sore recurrence, in one study by as much as 81%. In this same study some of the participants reported that using SLS-free toothpaste also reduced canker sore severity. There are SLS free products available.

Injury:
Injury, often from a self-inflicted bite or irritation caused by braces can cause canker sores. 38% of the participants of one study felt that their canker sores were precipitated by trauma.

Stress:
Many people report that the ulcers coincide with periods of stress.

Nutritional deficiencies:
Some of the nutritional deficiencies correlated with the presence of canker sores are B vitamins, zinc, folic acid and selenium.

Allergies:
Since canker sores are caused by our bodies' immune response, it makes sense that they can be triggered by food allergies. Any substance that contacts the oral tissues may lead to an overzealous immune response.

Certain Drugs:
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), beta blockers, and chemotherapy may increase the frequency of canker sores

Genetics:
One study found that 35% of those persons who get canker sores have at least one parent who suffers from them.

Canker Sore Prevention
If a canker sore appears shortly after a ?trigger' event, then there may be a relationship. Recurrent canker sores may be the result of nutritional deficiencies. A patient who has regular problems with canker sores should have blood tests to determine possible vitamin deficiencies, and to determine potential problems with allergies. It may be helpful to keep a "food diary" to determine potential allergies or food irritants.

Other canker sore prevention tactics include:
-Avoid SLS toothpastes and mouthwashes.
-Include yogurt and other cultured, soured dairy products in your diet.
-Avoid tobacco, chewing gum, and lozenges.
-Avoid citrus fruits.
-Eat salads and raw onions.
-Do not take iron supplements unless prescribed by a doctor.

Diet and canker sores. What food allergies or reactions may cause canker sores?

A study conducted in Turkey suggested that wheat, oranges, tomatoes, chocolate, nuts, eggplant, tea and cola may trigger aphthous ulcers. [Oral Surg. 1984:57, pp.504-507] When food triggers are identified and eliminated from the diet, as many as 50% of those suffering from recurrent canker sores notice dramatic improvement.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that diets high in sugar, citrus, and cereal grains may trigger canker sores. By avoiding these foods, the patient can see for himself whether they may be triggers in his case.

Adequate zinc and folic acid intake are essential for rapid healing. In addition, nutrients such as DGL licorice, goldenseal, and pau d'arco tea have a tradition of helping heal aphthous ulcers.
