Opossum's Smile

I was just downstairs grabbing a soda and checked the back patio for little furry buddies that like to come by at night. Raccoons, opossums, deer, groundhogs, squirrels, chipmunks, moles, etc. We feed them a couple of handfuls of peanuts each evening along with the occassional dog treat.

Tonight, I saw something new:
A baby opossum and a full-grown raccoon, peacefully (sorta) eating together. They were nose-to-nose eating from the same peanut pile. I ran out to the truck and nabbed the camera to get some shots.

Heh heh....it's actually a beef stick dog treat. I forget the name of them. Sort of like beef jerky for dogs. The raccoons love 'em.

I'm not wearing gloves. We have a few very friendly ones that come right up to the door- and sometimes into the house!- to get treats. Usually I just leave a couple sticks with the peanuts, but somtimes I let them grab the treats from me with their paws. They're quite dexterous. I never let them get close enough to bite me. If I want them to back away, I simply stand up.

Our record in one night is 14 raccoons at one time. 4 moms; 10 babies. Disgustingly cute. I've seen a couple of 4-point bucks, and one 6-point. Deer are a lot bigger than you think when they're 2' away from you.

There's a sign in the garage that came with the house. It says, "DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS". It's in front of Rachel's car.

U definately keep some strange company...however, I have always been kind of partial to raccoons....I dunno why, guess I'm just krazy!!

Good pics Kevan. I like racoons but opossums are kind of freaky to me.
It sounds like you you live in a nature wonderland. With winter coming on your place will be a very popular stop for the "locals".

racoons are coute ,also can be mean, i went hunting witha friend one time and watched on almost kill a dog, tore his ear slam off.

Those opossums crack me up......all big a bad, but jump towards one and the play dead.....

Really cool pics.My uncle Mike used to have a family of coons come up outta the sewer drain in Colma (near san francisco) to get cookies every night. Isnt nature great.:rock:
