I called Unitrax today to finally order my gears. Well Devin is on vacation this week so I talked to his dad Jerry. Jerry was very helpful in helping me decide on which ones to buy. Once I told Jerry I lived on Maui his response was "oh definatly the 488's" !!!! Marc, Mas, Droptail and others your peer presure finally worked but.......................since Devin is on vacation Jerry couldnt answer a few things so I cant order them till next Monday! Oh well whats another week!

488's it is!

patrick

Yes it does. I asked him about that.......just trying to educate myself. He also said something about reusing the bearings in there. I had never heard of that before, but basically if the shop has the proper tools to remove the cones then the bearings you can reuse them. If not new ones are another $100 or so.

I have no idea really what a "new carrier" really is. Is it a good thing or not? I dont know. Got any info Dave?

patrick

No not really.I tried to buy 4.88`s last year from Devin but they wouldn`t reccomend them or sell them.I am glad now since the SC will work better with the 4.56`s or maybe the 4.10`s.

I think that they will make the truck feel 1000 pounds lighter on takeoff though.

Oh yeah, Jerry said the 4.88's would be way fun!! I am really excited about getting them installed!

It did work out for you with the 4.56's. No way you could use a SC with 4.88's. You inadvertedly saved yourself some $ !!

gears

patrick, glad you are finally going for it,the carrier is the piece the ring gear bolts to,kind of a bowl with a flange,it had been said a lot of times that a different carrier was needed but I guess no one wanted to believe that, good choice anyways, you will enjoy
Bill

Patrick,

Glad to see you finally are making the plunge. You will really feel the difference between the 4:10 and 4:88 set up!! You will love it!!

As you know I do have the 4:88's and no new carrier was needed!! I ordered it and they were going to install it but realized it would work without it!!Saved me some $$$$!!:dontknow:

I have over 3000 miles on my gears with no noise or problems!!

Just though I would mention that!!

Once I can find a good shop, I am planning to go with the 5.13s. Someone on the old board did and really liked them. I won't be going to the strip, and so getting into 5th gear is not a concern of mine.

Devin is one of the good guy's...... he'll help you out when he gets back.
Just one note Patrick, you will be shifting twice as much as you are now :burnout: you could be in fourth gear and only be doing 30/mph.

Actually it's Gearheadbill that has the 5.13's. Last I heard he loved them. Maybe he will chime in again.

This is why I am waiting for Devin to get back from his vacation. His dad Jerry said Devin handles all this and wasnt sure about a few things. No biggie I'll wait and get it right the first time.

Marc, you didnt have to buy new bearings did you? Your installer just reused the stock ones I am guessing.

patrick

when I first deceided to change the gears on my 04, I thought about 4.88, and 5.13, but since I drive mine to other states sometimes i felt that those would be too much gear for me. Patrick since you live in Hawaii I don't think long distance is a concern for you, go with the 5.13s, IMO.

Bill dont confuse me anymore than I was for a month!!! LOL

BTW....I hear these 04's have a sixth gear? LOL Does Boomers shifter go to sixth gear? LOL

for the guys that are staying N/a the 488's & 513's are great! But for us Forced induction guys, we run out of gear @ the track :(

Yes Patrick, my truck spends most of its time in 6th gear, and I have the 4.56s. I also average 13 MPG around town ( yes I drive it real easy, for gas mileage and because there are way too many cops around here).

Patrick,

We could have used the old bearings but chose to install new ones!!:D

'Bout F'n Time Dooooood!!

Ya know what your first gear feels like now? Well, after the gear change this is what 2nd will feel like! 1st is gonna be sa-weeeeet!:D Actually, you'll most likely have no problems starting out in 2nd gear if you choose to do so!:)

I have 4.56's like Begood Bill, and I'm lucky to get 10 around town!:p :D  :dontknow:

Hey Patrick,
Its about time!:D  The 1st time you will get to punch it in 1st gear will put a smile on your face.
